A hell of a good time! That's what! and a way long story. sorry about the length you dont have to read it if you dont want to but i finally accomplished something i have wanted to do for years. so im a little excited.
i set out for the blackfoot reservoir this morning with my 6 wt TFO fly rod and some woolly bugger and leech patterns i tied up last night. i have always wanted to catch a carp on a fly rod i have done it on spinning gear numerouse times. i arrived at the reservoir at about 9:30 am and i parked right at the poison creek boat ramp. there was no wind, the water was glass and the sun was shining. perfect i thought. i started watching the water by the shore line while i put my waders on and got my vest and fly rod ready it took me about 15 minutes and i never seen one fish break water wich is weird because ussually this time of year right by the boat ramp the carp are just tearing up the banks. so i was kinda nervouse at first but i stayed optimistic because of the reports on here about the carping their lately. i walked around the first two coves and never saw a single fish. as i was coming up on the third cove wich was quite a bit bigger but just as shallow about 2feet to 3 feet of water and the only thing i could see was fish kicking up wake all over right up against the bank. i got so excited it was like being a kid on christmas. i found a good matt of grass i could hide my self behind and i started to throw my fly in front of passing fish. i started out with a black egg sucking pattern called the thing tied locally by a guy i know from swan valley. a couple of big old boys would swirl around on the fly and look at it when i would give it a little strip and make it twitch but they wouldnt take it i tried that fly for 20 minutes with out one hookup. its a little unnerving watching 30 lb fish just stare at your fly for a couple seconds then just turn around like it wasnt even there. that got old pretty quick so i switched out to a size 6 olive woolly bugger i tied this fly last night its an eggsucking style basickly a normal wolly bugger with a pink channele head. i tied it on and waited for a bigger fish to pass by there were plenty of smaller carp in the water lots of 5lbs and 10 lbs but there were also plenty of 20lbs and 30lbs also. they came in schools. finally 3 fish came through all in the upper 20lbs im guessing they were real close to 30lbs i made a perfect cast about a foot infront of the fish as they cruised threw the water i let it sink down to where i thought it was level with one of the fish's head and then i gave my fly a quick short strip and that monster opened his mouth and sucked my fly in. FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!! holy crap did he peal line off my fly reel it went from having about 10 feet out to backing in about 4 seconds he held in the middle of the bay for a couple seconds and i put to much preasure on my line and popped him off. i was bummed but i tied on a new fly and went back to it the very next cast i hooked into a really descent fish he wasnt quite as big as the last one but he was about the same in fight ran me all the way into my backing held for a minute then let me drag him in about 10feet from he took one look at me and said oh no see ya later and peeled me back down to my backing he held a nother minute then i slowly reeled him in and landed the brute he was a toad not bad for my first carp on a fly rod he weighed in at 26 lbs i was extatic!!!! i fished for another hour hooking into three more fish that were all upper 20lbs and all three i fought for what seemed for ever just to have the fly pop off on two and the hook just came out on one. i had a great day and no complaints even if i did lose a few fish. next time im bringing my 7wt and a 2x leader instead of 6wt with 3 x leader carp are nothing but pure power and you really get to feal it on a fly rod, mabey ill keep them on next time. thanks for reading fellas heres a pick of the brute i landed
