Okay so I been trying to find an answer to this with no luck. I been watching some you tube videos and watching some of these rods flex to the point where you can almost make a hula-hoop. But what bothers me is if you get to where its flexed pretty good and the darn line breaks is your rod gonna whip you in the face?
This is probably a stupid question but not knowing is really bugging me. Common sense tells me yeah but I don't know. And if so how do you make sure this doesn't happen to you?
thanks [fishin]

If you have on a fish big enough to bend your rod that far you probably should be holding the reel almost at your face level then if the line does break you won't get smacked.
On another note you should never have your line break. Your knot should come loose before your line breaks actually. Here's why. DRAG. If you have your drag set properly you will almost never have your line break because any fish big enough to break your line will break the DRAG threshold and your reel will let line peel off until the fish is no longer running with more tension than your line test.
The unwritten rule for drag is simple. Whatever the strength of the line your using, divide it by 4 and that's how much pound of force it should take to get the drag working. So for example if you are using 4 pound mono filament line then you should get a spring scale and attach the end of the line to the hook of the spring scale and pull on the line just enough to where the spring scale reads 1 pound. Then twist the drag knob until the line starts to pull out of the reel right at 1 pound of pressure.
Set your drag properly and you should never have to deal with a rod smack to the face! hehe.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I was wondering what that little knob was for LOL.

Long Beach eh? I lived in Venice Beach for two years... and La Jolla for 6 years.
Now I am land locked in Arkansas. But not complaining, the Bass fishing here is phenomenal. I do miss the surf and catching exotic fish but hooking a 7 to 10lb bass here almost every time I go fishing is worth the trade off for now.
I hope to get back there someday and start surfing again and pier fishing. I love catching those 20 to 30lb saltwater babies...
Welcome to the site. You will find that everyone here is very helpful and you can learn a lot from and probably teach us a lot as well.
Welcome!

you could do what i do..keep the drag set lose all the time and apply the extra pressure as needed with the palm of the hand of the hand..against the side of the reel..

I have read a lot of posts here and other places that tell me to have my drag "set properly" with no clear explanation as to exactly what that meant. Thanks a lot I am going to set the drag on my poles to your formula as soon as possible.
One of my goals is to catch a fish big enough to strip line from my reel and I shared that on this (or maybe another) forum once and was told to just set my drag really loose...I think he was just kidding!
