Well I finally caught my first fish with my fly rod.. Not only my 1st fish but i caught them on the San Juan river in New Mexcio..[cool][cool] WOW what a rush !! As soon as the fish were hooked they headed for fast water.. What a fight !! I lost 3 but managed to land four.. At first i was using 7x.. Then i went to 5x witch seemed to be the ticket.. I caught them on San Juan worms, flash back pheasant tails, zebra midges.. I fished close to the dam.. A little hole called The texas hole.. Im HOOKED !!!!

San Juan River (at Navajo Dam) is one of my favorite hot spots.

The problem is that those fish key on such small patterns that sometimes catching is a challenge. I routinely use #24 and smaller midges, drys, and nymphs there in order to have a productive day.

Where did you stay? I have stayed at "Famous Abe's" in the past, but it is little more than 4 walls and a toilet. The last time I was up there, I stayed at a small bed and breakfast that was well worth the extra $20 per night.

Anyhoo, there are some hogs out there and boy are you right about heading straight into the fast water. Those fish feel twice as large as they really are. They are strong with some pretty beefy shoulders.

It has been 6 months since my last visit. The last time I was there, I caught "Valley Fever" (Coxy_____ - Fungal Infection) in my lungs. I spent the next 4 months in ans out of the hospital with pneumonia. At one time, the docs actually thought that my cancer had come back. That Valley Fever is NO JOKE. Apparently you can get it just from breathing in spores from kicking up dirt and dust.
