There are walleye in there, some pretty big ones, but not many people target them. They are more plentiful upriver.

Really? I've heard of them being in the upper portion, but never that low. Are there even enough to target them and how would you suggest targeting them. Never caught a Walleye.

I don't know of anyone targeting them. It is such a traditional place to fish for catfish that I don't think anyone fishes for much else. I caught my biggest walleye to date a couple of years ago down close to the refuge, 26" long and very healthy. I was fishing a strip of carp meat for catfish.
If I were to target them I would go with a jig tipped with crawler or roll a spinner tipped with a crawler through likely holding areas.

i dont believe there is enough of anything else to target besides carp and cats...several times i have spent whole days 8 to 10 hours throwing my cast nets and have never caught anything besides carp, cats, GIZZARD SHAD, and a few shiners and chubs...
now im not saying they arent there.... i have caught a walleye in the refuge... it was 11 in long and it ate a shiner minnow. i have also caught a couple green sunfish and A gilll... both on crawlers.
i think it would be kind of neat too put the time in and throw some hardware and see what comes out!!

Thank you for all the replys and advice! I was out there last night. The kitties sure were biting! Pork and Shrimp seemed to be the ticket. Nothing of size just couple pounders.

They were horrible until about midnight. It chilled off and they were no where to be found. Anyone ever catch frogs out there and use them for bait?

In Utah aren't live frogs illegal to use for bait?
When I was growing up in Colorado, we used live frogs all the time, they worked great for cats. I guess you could use them as long as they were dead or does that rule only apply to minnows[:/]? WH2

I understood you could. Maybe I am wrong. All I know is that from what i've heard the kitties love em!
