On Momorial day Josh and I went down to are favorite spot on UL caught a ton of these little speckle bellys cats should be good eatin. Oh ya and we did catch a few big ones I think one is a blue cat he was really dark colored. the one at the end is a big ole white bass that I couldnt save after he swallowed a 1/4 lbs of cut bait on a 5 O octo hook
Still Lookin for a monster

Oh sweet Jesus my head hurts! There are NO blue cats in Utah Lake-period. Color has nothing to do with it, the best way to tell a blue from a channel is the anal fin. A Channel has a 'rounded' anal fin and a blue has a 'square' anal fin. I'll go through my pics and see what I can find.

Nice cats! I have fished Utah Lake 4 times in the last 2 years (while at the inlaws) skunk x 4! One of these days I'll figure it out. Thanks for the pics.

the fish might have been blue, but there isn't any (blue cats) in utah lake only muds and channels... looks like you had a good time out, you cant beat some fast action on those cats.

[cool][#0000ff]As you have been so eloquently advised, by our senior biologist FFF, there are no blue catfish in Utah. The coloration is a matter of gender...not species. Male channel cats are typically more of a dark blue color, ranging to almost black during the peak of spawning.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Attached is a side by side picture of male and female channel cats...the male being the grey/blue one. The males also usually have a wider head, in proportion to the width of the body, than females. They also get big fleshy lips that make them downright ugly. All catfish have a problem with beauty, but male cats are the worst.[/#0000ff]

Dont let your head hurt they look like they are blues. anything is possible a few years back someone caught a parinna out their would you say their are no parinnas out in the lake

[#0000ff]What the heck is a "parinna"? Do you mean piranha?[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There have been no piranhas taken from Utah Lake but there was a closely related species...a pacu...which is a vegetarian, mostly. It can also tolerate cooler waters better. Piranhas die off in water under 60 degrees. Here is a pacu.[/#0000ff]

Nice catch. Unless I read wrong, be careful using mud cat parts as bait. They are considered a gamefish and are not allowed to be used as bait. I guess the fish could have eaten a 1/4 pound whole mud cat that was on your line...

There are some male cats that have a black head darker than TDs pics.

The first 8 or 10 we caught we threw back and decided these little guys was all we were going to catch mabey we need to harvest more so their is more abundance of food for them

I think you might have read his post wrong. It doesn't say he used those for bait, probably was using carp or white bass.
To Danielc
Those are some good looking cats...I am gonna have to give that a try....

the temperature doesnt have anything to do with whether or nor piranha can live in UL. because in the summer they definatly can. 2 have been caught from the jordan river which as you know is connected to the lake. It would make sense that theres been a few in the lake during the odd summer here and there.

they were probably someones pets that they let go in there
[signature]
Well yah obviously

[cool] I may not be a biologist but you are not an English professor. 'nuff said.

OK guys, please drop it here and just agree to disagree, thanks.

You might want to take a little trip to the in laws right now is good time to hook up with those kitties

Are there Blue Cats anywhere in Utah?

[quote LordoftheFlies]Are there Blue Cats anywhere in Utah?[/quote]
[cool][#0000ff]Not "officially". DWR has made conscious decisions a long time ago to avoid planting either blue cats or flatheads. Probably a good reason for it. Actually two reasons. Trout and june suckers. The big kitties are major predators.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I made a similar reply with pictures, etc. on the thread about Record Cats. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]There are a bajillion pseudo biologists in Utah who are ready to go fist city over their claims that they have caught honest to goodness BLUE CATS...or know somebody who did...and they trust them. But, when you ask them what are the biological differences between a blue cat and a male channel cat in spawning mode, they don't gots a clue. To them, if it looks blue, it is a BLUE CAT...or a BLUE CHANNEL CAT. Actually, the second nomenclature is not wrong, as long as they are referring to color phase and not a separate species.[/#0000ff]
