Well, I would like to see this translate into "proof" that if the state would stock more muskie and northern pike it would yield more revenue due to the popularity of these fish...it is great to go to a lake with the possibility on any cast of hooking a 40" plus fish. I caught some 40"+ muskie this past week outta state and it was great.
Let's think about the revenue from a tiger vs a rainbow...large baits, rapalas, much more expensive than a jar of powerbait.
Just my opinion - think that the state needs to focus on warm water fish and really consider and act on stocking more northern and even muskie (I know many are concerned with a potential disease factor with the muskie).
I couldnt agree more, The more Muskie, Pike, Walleye, etc. the better. The DNR on the other hand, doesnt seem to agree. Maybe someday.....................

I couldn't agree more. When I hear reports that on average people spend 3 days on Yuba to catch a pike I think that's a great stocking opportunity for the state. Would also help kill a lot of carp off which is desperately needed as I could about walk over them from my boat to shore in the bays. UT Lake should think about it. Wow, those june suckers would be tasty for those Pike ha ha. If we got enough pike in the state I'd actually start eating them here. They are as good IMHO as walleye's. Sorry bigguyone1 I know you're cringing at that last statement.

be carefull were you tread guy..theres alot of trout fiserman on this site..this post could get out of hand in a hurry..

All he appears to be saying to me is he'd like to have more pike, musky and walleye stocked in UT waters. If that causes hurt feelngs some folks should get thicker skin IMHO. He's got as much right to want that as a trout fisherman does to want his trout stocked like they are by the millions. If a trout fisherman says he wants more trout stocked is that going to cause a musky fisherman to take a post and let it get out of hand? I'd say no and he should be given the same courtesy.

just an observation from past history..thats all.should be fun to watch..

Good point Bigguyone1, I personally haven't purchased a jar of Powerbait in over 4 years. However every time I go to any tackle shop I purchase at least 2-3 "Big Fish Lures" (that is about every 2 weeks) and yes my wife would attempt to hurt me if she saw the price tag that has equated to so far[laugh] I have only hooked 1 Norhtern at Yuba and it was the best feeling since my trip to Alaska. I hope the people in charge of finding a disease free source of Northerns and Muskie can find them soon. That will hopefully speed up the process of more stocking and get the word out to more "new comers" to Toothy Critter angling. (like myself). You Ratstar and Pezvela have been a huge help to me on getting more excited for these fish. Thanks and keep up the good work guys[fishin]

pike/musky fishing is amazing on a fly rod, and when in get there, look out yuba/PV. im gunna try to hook a few on the fly. i would compare it to salmon on a fly rod, especially when they attack a top water popper. just my 2 cents

It would be a heck of a fight. They give a spinning rig a workout so would be a good time on a fly rod for sure.

well yuba does not realy need a stocking of pike.. there is a lot of pike in yuba!! spending 3 day's to catch one is just part of the game! your trying to catch a apex predater that gett's realy big.. big fish dont get big from being stupid.. the stupid one's have alredy been caught..
i dont think you will ever see the Utah DWR stock pike in any lake in the state ever again!(BTW yuba was never stocked by the DWR! it was stocked be the locol's of redmond by throwing the pike out of redmonds into the dranage that went to the suvier river).. the tiger musky is a much more likeable fish to them.. the control is what they like about them.. they the DWR can control how many there are in the system at any given time.. pike they can't do that..

We'll disagree on the number of pike in Yuba and how it should take three days to catch one. I've caught 50+ Pike in a day on several occasions in WI on lakes a lot smaller then Yuba. You don't need to spend all day to catch a pike. Pike are very aggressive and one of the easiest species of fish to catch that I've ever fished for. There are so many flipping carp in Yuba that they could plant thousands of pike there and let them chow down.

well again yuba is not in minn, or WI now is it.. the water levels are up and down in any given year.. and much as 50 feet or more.. very rare back in minn or WI to have water levels do that.. the numbers of pike are there in yuba.. and i will say this there are more pike in Yuba now then there has ever been!! [sly]..
carp and water is Yuba's biggest problm.. not numbers of game fish..
BTW ever think that the pike are eating so well on what they got that they dont need to be very aggressive? there is a lot of food in the lake for them right now.. later on in the year the food will be running low then they will be a lot more aggressive and easyer to catch..

i was also wanting to go fly fishing for muskies .wonderin what would be good to use

The lake our cottage in Northern WI is on is so low right now that we have 20 ft of mud before you hit water as far as water levels go. It is more gradual/stable there I understand. Your obvious attempt to notice that Yuba isn't in WI is noted, thank you, I had no idea. Maybe we could learn something in these waters by looking at waters that re actually managed and fished aggresively and oh yeah almost forgot, loaded with Pike. We do agree on the fact that there are so many carp that the pike are harder to catch , that was my point in adding more pike. I have never seen a lake that is loaded with carp die off or stunt like pan fish do. I'm no game biologist and didn't sleep at a holiday inn express last night but the way I look at it is tons of bait fish for them to eat, add some more pike. It would benefit the carp situation for sure and add some great fishing to UT not the three days of fishing per fish when the lake could sustain far more then that.
Are you really stating that Yuba wouldn't benefit by adding more Pike? And that Yuba has plenty of Pike in it and we shouldn't add more if it were an option which I know it's probably not?

Tiger Musky may not be an option for a long time either, until they can find a disease free strain of Musky they will not be put into UT waters from what I've read.

I'm a total rookie fly fisherman and pretty much try not to snag myself lol. I would think anything that imitates bait fish would do you well. Make sure you use a leader that will not break off when it touches a tooth.

no what i'm saying is the utah DWR will never add more pike to any water in the state ever again!! no qustion in my mind on that.. so the next best thing is to get the utah DWR to start a CARP removel program of the system.. and try and start a water program with the water user's to keep water in the lake when the perch are spowing..
that is the only way the lake is going to get any better than it is right now!!
and as i have said i have fished yuba for around 30 years.. it's been fishing for pike better in the last 3 years than it ever has in the 30 i have been fishing it.. so to me it's as good now as it has ever been!!

Well I agree with everything you said in this post. I'm going to get my bowhunting rig set up for fishing the next time I hit Yuba. I couldn't believe how many stinking carp there were. There was a lot of them aboutt 16" long, that's about the size sucker I used to run a few treble hooks through and throw under the biggest bobber you can find for pike back home so I know the pike are eating well on them.

well my set up is like this..... a piece of good 18lb, flurocarbon leader, about 5 feet long, and attached to a 10 foot, good supple steel leader, cortland makes a good one. big flashy streamers when the waters chilly or i cant make it to the weeds. if im in the weeds/brush, HUGE poppers in natural bait colors, ie. my fav looks like a frog! i use my 8 weight cause 9.5 times out of 10 im casting from the boat and need the length and size of the line to chuck those giant flies, not to mention the wind. hope some of this helps, and please know im by no means proficient at it, just have hit it right the few times i have done it.

Regarding the Tiger Muskie situation. I had a chance to speak with Walt Donaldson the other day and this is the update on the muskie. DWR has the pike, from Recapture Res, in the ponds at Kay Lee. They have obtained a disease free strain of Muskie that are in the final stages of certification. Once that is done, they will be able to begin the breeding program for muskie, then the hybridization progam for Tiger Muskie production. They are still 2-3 years down the road before they will be able to stock fish from their own production. HOWEVER, they have been lucky to find some tigers in two midwestern states that are extras from their programs. Trucks are enroute ( may be back already) to pick up the little buggers to be planted .....somewhere in Utah. So, I give BIG KUDOS to DWR for working their butts off to not only secure a supply of disease free fish for our stocking program, but also to keep trying to find other sources of Hybrid fish to stock immediatly. Everyone on this board should email Drew Cushing and Walt Donaldson their big THANKYOU for staying on this and seeing it through.
