The fishing has been going down hill in there over the last 5 years because it's become overrun with stunted brookies. Can't keep those little rodents of a fish off your hook enough to catch many of the few big ones left. That said you can still go and frequently have solitude in a beautiful setting and catch a few medium to large fish especially right after run off ends in another week or so. It's also usually good dry fly fishing in summer. Later summer a very large hopper pattern is the ticket as most of the brookies won't manage to hook themselves as they strike repeatedly (although a few runts will) and you can have something float long enough to have a better shot at the nicer fish. Despite it's short comings I still prefer it to the combat that takes place for underweight trout down below.

Does the upper Provo run through Woodland?
Im working up there this week. Maybe I should take my pole and sneak in an hour of late afternoon fishing.
Does anyone know some access areas or close fishing spots near the town of Woodland? I really dont get up that way unless I have a job to do.

The fishing up there isn't great as mentioned earlier, but I do fish it since I live down the road. If solitude is what you are after, you might be suprised as more people fish there than you might guess. There are a lot of small brooks and browns, every now and then a cutt or bow and some fair sized whitefish.

You need to be careful to not trespass, as it is all private up there. With the new law you need to stay within the high water mark (which the water is at now). I tried to wade it 2 days ago and gave up after I almost got swept downstream.

In high school, I had a friend whos family had a cabin on the upper provo (south fork I believe?) just before you get to the mill hollow turn off. It used to be good fishing, browns, cutts, and whites. As for the upper, upper provo in the uintas, it looks good, but is sucks! My brother and I basically grew up in the Uintas (we were there so much), and we could never catch fish out of the upper provo. It is one of those streams that you say to yourself "looks like it should have fish", but it doesn't! Good luck!

As for the provo in the canyon, I sure do miss the days back in the 90's when my brother and I used to slay the fish up there, with size too! Those days have long gone! Sad to see. Makes me sick to see the shoulder to shoulder fishing that goes on there now. Oh well, that's what happens when a good thing comes along, it gets used up!

The Provo up along Mirror Lake Highway has really come down quickly over the last 2 weeks. Hit it half way between the Lower Provo campground and the turn off for Soapstone. Been up biking several times but didn't bother to fish it until today. I noticed quite a few hoppers during my biking today and couldn't resisit giving it a quick try afterward. Caught dozens in 90 minutes on the water with a size 10 rainy's foam hopper. If a hole or run looked fishing I usually got a strike. Most where only 8-10 inches but about a dozen where at least a foot long. Caught a couple rainbows and cutts each. The rest were all brookies. Biggest was about 15 inches so nothing very big but the constant topwater action was a blast. Most of the tiny brookies would take a look and not strike and those that did only a couple got hooked. Fish where jumping out of the water to strike at times. No storms threatening, not too hot and nobody in sight. Buying gas in park city I overheard 2 guides talking. One said he counted 27 cars parked at one place on the Provo[crazy]. I didn't think fishing was supposed to be a contact sport.

My buddy has been fishing the upper provo along the mirror lake highway and has been doing good with the dry flies. He was catching mostly cutts and brookies, but caught a nice grayling the other day. The south fork of the upper flowing pretty clear and just a little high right now, but very fishable right below woodland. I also imagine that you could walk up from Rock cliff and catch quite a few fish on the hopper dropper.

I've done really well for smaller to medium sized fish up along the Mirror Lake Highway. The last time I went I caught over 100 fish. Most were 8-10" brookies and cutts, but I found a few bows and cuttbows as well as the fish you see as my icon, whatever it is. I did manage one brown of about 15", but he was the only one. I caught a lot on attractor dries, ants, beetles, and small nymphs below my stimmies and turks. It's a fun time if you're not after large fish.

fished the provo just past woodland today with a lot of success. most fish were small cutthroat 6-10", but did manage to pull several nice fish out. i only fished dries (18 griffiths gnat) and had no reason to switch flies even once! spoke with another guy, who was also the only other person i saw all day, who said he was killin em with zebra midges as well.

Ive done exceptionally well on the upper provo almost everytime i fish the river. And for small fish there are alot but its very common for me to catch 18-20 inch browns in this river almost everytime i go up there, and not to mention my brother caught a 26 inch 6 pound brown not too long ago...but i have secrets stretches i fish and i cant tell the whole world sorry!
