Went to the gorge for a couple days- fishing was slow for us, I've never seen so many small macs. We fished mostly around Hideout and the red cliffs, 7-8 Kokes 10-11 small macs. These are the only pics I took. (all from the boat, except the potgut[Smile])

WOW!! those are very good pictures. Are you sure YOU took them [Wink] Thats a really close picture of the potgut, what kind of camera do you have? It looks like hes picking at his teeth with a toothpick lol. I use to take family portraits for Olan Mills and am interested in the camera and lense you use. I would like to get me a good digital camera. I bought me a good SLR camera years ago, wish i would have waited because now the digital ones are down close to what i paid for my SLR. Not a real good, but its decent lol. Those are very good pictures. We're going up there in a couple weeks, hope we are able to see the same scenery as you were able to. [cool]

I'm pretty sure I took them.. [laugh] I guess I should mention I own a photography studio. I used a Canon 1d markIII with a 70-200L IS lens for all of the pictures. Thanks for the compliments.

definitely can tell you have some skill, looks like you scanned post cards lol......not saying you did, saying thats how good they are. How much do those camera's run? What do you think about the nikons?

I was there camping at Hideout. Too bad we did not meet.

The camera is $4500 and the lens is around $2000. Nikon makes great cameras, but I believe your money goes a little further with a Canon. Thanks again.

We try to watch for BFT stickers on boats when we go, I'll keep an eye out for you next time. My next trip will be with the family on the 24th of July.

Great pics.

Where were the sheep at? Were they taken from the boat? I'm going to fish it the gorge this year and my wife would dig seeing that from the water.

Sheep are not rare at Flaming Gorge. We often see them on the southern rocks near the Antelope Flats boat ramp. Many of the sheep have radio collars on, but they still put on a great show. We have watched them ram each other, jump around on the rocks, etc.

You can also find a large herd around the Red Canyon Lodge/Overlook area. I have also seen them on the rocks near Sheep Creek south of Manila.

Good Luck!

In case you're fishing this end of the reservoir, I've been seeing them in Jarvies. My pics are low quality compared to the ones above though.

awwww, that baby sheep is cute. Still a very good picture. Great photo op. I cant wait to go next week [sly]. Just hope we can catch some fishies too.

I don't know about the sheep search but fishing has been pretty awesome and you should do good. Sounds like you're bringing some kids and they should get a kick out of the smallmouth fishing. I had my kids out night before last, and they each caught 6-8 fish while casting 1/4 oz jigs (Yamamoto single tails in black/silver flake and green/gold flake). My son landed one that was about 2lbs, but most were around 8-10 inches. They were pretty excited. Good luck, Ryno

yes, have my 11 year old daughter and my sisters 5 year old twins. That sounds awesome, where did your kids catch them fish? I would love to see them catch a bunch of fish and enjoy themselves.

I look for the BFT stickers also. Mine is on my windshield but I did not see any this trip. I swear I saw Sockeye slayer drive through on Sunday headed toward Hideout but did not recognize anyone else. Maybe next time...

We were fishing down near the dam, in Dutch John Draw. If you're fishing uplake just look for broken rock and you'll find the smallies. I like all that country around the Pipeline for fast action smallmouths. Good luck, Ryno

great thanks. My dad said the bass were by the dam. Been years since we've been out there tho. Guess they're still there hehe

I would have thought you had a bit bigger lens than a 200 to get that close. The IS sure helps a lot on those zooms, though.

When it comes to DSLR cameras, at least in the lower range ($700-1300) I think you will be VERY happy whether you go with a Nikon or a Canon. If you have lenses from a fairly recent film SLR, look for a camera that can use those lenses. Most of these cameras in either brand can outshoot all but the very best photographers.
I know the nikons a bit better, so I can speak to them, but can't say a lot about canons.
If you have older Nikon AF lenses go with either an older D50 or D70s (should be able to get the D50 for under $400) or find a D80 or D90 (a bit more recent but much better camera). The D40 and D60 will not focus these older lenses. They will work on those cameras, but you must manually focus the lens.
I had the D50 and really loved it. I upgraded this last year to the D80 and it is a LOT more camera, and I love it even more.

With that said, you can get some pretty good photos with even the most basic camera if you have an eye for the photo. Here's one I took with an old Minolta Dimage Z1 3.2 MP camera. You can get these cameras used now for under $100.

I dont have anything too fancy now, Minolta Maxxum 5. Still cost me about $400 tho when i got it. Should have waited and got myself a digital now. Dont have a huge lense either so dont have to worry about being compatible. I do need to get me a good digital tho. Thanks for the information. [laugh]
