Just got back from Moon Lake. We got there on Wed. afternoon. After checking into the cabins, we took the boat out and tried a little trolling with various lures. We didn't get a bite. We found a few fish jumping so I put on the old fly and bubble no bites with that either. As it was starting to get dark we decided to troll back to the cabin. Being to lazy to put a lure back on I just left the fly and bubble on and started dragging it behind the boat. Believe it or not I caught a fish. ( a small kokanee)
On thursday morning I went out alone. I tried the fly and bubble at various places around the lake with pretty limited success. One small splake at the mouth of Brown Duck Creek, one small tiger at the mouth of Lake Fork River and one small rainbow at the mouth of Fish Creek.
Thurs. evening we went out trolling again. Just for fun I put on the fly and bubble and drug it across the lake at 1.5-2.0 mph and caught a couple of small kokes. We stopped and started casting flies. and caught another koke and 3 planter bows. One strange thing that we saw that evening was little mini boils with several fish in a little circle about 3 feet in diameter. If you drug your fly across one of those boils you were garanteed a bite. We had a lot of bites but we either couldn't hook them or we couldn't land them. I assumed that it was do the the soft mouth on the kokes but most got off before we could see them so ?
It rained all night and into the morning Fri. but I went out in the rain anyway. For a brief period between the rain stopping and the wind starting I found some rising fish near the spillway and caught one koke and two rainbows.
We went out Fri. evening to the same place as the night before, but we didn't find any of the mini boils only scattered fish rising. I caught two kokes and my son in law caught one koke and two rainbows.
One last try this morning (Sat.) I started trolling my fly down toward the dam. I caught one koke. As I past the mouth of Fish Creek I saw one of the mini boils just a few feet off shore and right at the mouth of the creek. I cast to the boil and fish on. I proceeded to catch 19 rainbows with many more bites and LDR's until the sun came up and the fish stopped rising. Two or three were holdovers in the 14" to 15" range and very fat.
There were several firsts for me on this trip.
1. Kokes on the surface.
2. Kokes on a fly.
3. Fish (kokes) on a trolled fly.
4. Bows and kokes feeding in a boil. At least in a natural setting. I saw it once before when some bows were chummed with fish pellets.
Overall, kind of slow fishing but an interesting trip. I didn't spend much time around the other fishermen there. The only other fish that I saw caught was by a troller that went past me this morning. Water was going over the spillway and the temp was 53-55.
