Hello and hmmm I guess i go with good morning right now haha! I've been fishing on an off since i was 6. Fished Twin Lakes in Mammoth. Since then i've been stuck to a damned man-made lake out in the Palm Desert area when I go out of town with the family. Its very boring, 'cause they stock the lake with farm grown Bass.

Anyways I've decided since I live in San Pedro, which is on the coast, that I might pick up Surf Fishing. So now I'm on a quest, so to say, to figure out what's a good rod and reel set up to start with that isn't super expensive, or expensive in any manner. I'm also kinda wondering what i should be thinking bait wise. I heard that perch was in good population round where I live. So do i go catching Sand Crabs or do i go get some motor oil colored plastics? Oh yeah thats how i found the forum, researching on what to use to catch surf perch.

Well that's a bit lengthy, but I'm hoping I'll get a bit of advice in doing so, thou its unlikely.

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]Hi there Windfox and welcome to our membership. There are lots of places in SoCal to fish versus heading out to the Palm Desert area. Big Bear, Santa Ana River, East & West Forks of the San Gabriel River, etc. Do you prefer fishing the salt or fresh water? BTW here is a link to the California forum: [/#008000]

Well my thing is that I live in San Pedro, so going out to the places you mentioned takes sometime, which quite frankly at this point in time I really don't want to invest until I have the patience to learn how to correctly cast the fly pole my Da has given me to use.

But Saltwater fishing is really close to home. I go up to Manhattan Beach in like 30 minutes or so. And Surf fishing seems like a real fun time, and I can most likely pull my Da to fishing with me too, double the fun you know!

Freshwater wise I have all my Dad's stuff to pull from. About 20 or 30 years of gear. My favorite pole is his Eagleclaw, has this real nice cork handle! But I'd really have to on a trip to go to good places, and i'd perfer to do my research and figure out what to bring and yada yada, stuff i don't want to do now. Gonna be going to college in a month and half so you know. In a couple months i'm probbably gonna wanna head over to Catalina Island and try fishing over there. So yea saltwater is what i'm aiming for as long as i can have earth under my feet. I'm not up to go trolling.

Hello Windfox and welcome. There is a lot you can learn from this forum and you can talk to people locally or across the country. Irvine Lake is close to San Pedro and Big Bear Lake is absolutely beautiful this time of the year. Hope you find some good places to fish and have fun. Sincerely Kevin McClure, Vista, Ca.
p.s. Good luck with the surf fishing too.
