hi all,
i am moving to boise next month to attend boise state university, and of course, to fish. but, i have absolutely no knowledge of idaho fishing.
so, if anyone could give me a few tips on good spots/tackle shops around boise, that would be much appreciated.
cheers!
CJ strike, swan falls for locations. Try cabelas or sportsmans for shops. I like mr. twister grubs and senkos for bass, but a zara spook is good early morning. Panther Martins in holographic for trout. Hope that helps some.

You can fish right at the University if you want. The record German Brown was caught there a couple years ago. They are stocking salmon tomorrow on the Boise at Glenwood and at Barber Park. There are some good holes between Star and Barber PArk. The whole river throughout Boise has fish. There are also a bunch of ponds all around the valley that are stocked regularlly if you are into that. Lucky Peak is only about 10 miles or so out of town.

The best fishing from what ive heard is fly fishing. I have never tried it myself but I am going to soon. It opens an array of opportunities as some of the best fishing around is fly fishing only or baitless barbless hooks and whatnot.

I use Turners on state street just west of Veterans Parkway. He is the only mom and pop type store plus he has everything you will need plus some. And he always knows where the bite is.

The bigger stores are no where near water is probably the main reason I don't go often plus there is so much stuff to choose from I just freeze up after overload and it ends up being a wasted trip...lol

Fishsmelon has some good info, Turners is a great place for tackle and its always good to support the small shops. As far as the Boise River goes alot of people under estimate the fishing potential. Pick up a few Panther Martins, (and again I agree with the prior post, holographic rainbow colors work great) and you can catch plenty of trout all the way from Barber park to Star. Another great thing about the Boise is Fish and Game have been putting in a little under a 1000 steelhead each fall.

Are you new to Boise or to Idaho? Idaho has many blue ribbon trout streams. The middle fork of the Boise is fairly close to you. Silver creek is much further, but worth the trip. There are good catfish spots near Celebration park, and Melba. Sturgeon @ CJ Strike and Swan Falls. Extremely close are the park center, and veterans memorial ponds. They are fun after work spots. I like to swing up by Barber park (10 min drive from BSU) in between classes.

I agree that Turners is a nice tackle shop. I have also heard a lot about Idaho Angler, but I stick with Cabela's and Sportsman's.

There are also a fly fishing and fly tying classes offered at BSU ( I finally got into the tying class next semester).

Good luck!

yes, i'm new to idaho. i live in las vegas now, and next month am moving to boise.

i've noticed that fly fishing reigns supreme in boise. will i catch much in the boise river using my spinning reel setup?

You'll catch plenty of fish with a spinner reel setup, It does seem that the boise is more of a fly fishing river (I'm just starting) but I don't think its because it catches more fish its just more fun.

Don't know if your interested, but, you've got some great moving water small mouth fishing down stream of Swan Falls. It is my #1 fishing place but it's just too far now for this old fart, Ogden,Utah. My secret way is to drive to the end of the frontage road, sign says no vehicles allowed past sign, camp, and hike down river for about a mile. No one there and great fishing. You can also catch some nice kitties. [Smile]
