I made it up to Challis sat. and tried my luck. I learned the mosquitoes are thick, the sun is hot, and fishing is called fishing for a reason. I met ChromeJunky at Deer Gulch sat morning. Fished there for a while and only had one hit. Went up to Ellis hole later on and tried there. No luck, but the guys under the bridge did. Seen a few nice ones caught there, but you had to have "The Spot" in order to catch them.

Sunday we headed up river to Deadman Hole. I did manage to hook 2, but they spit the hook in about 10 secs. At least I got to feel what is was like to have a salmon on the other end even tho it was only for a short few secs. The rest of the day I spent tying hooks, losing sinkers, sun burning, trying to stay dry, and making egg sacks.

Sounds like the season will be open for 1 more week at the least. The hatcheries have their quota all ready and there are still a lot of fish to come up stream.

Here are a few scenery pics since the fish eluded me.

Thanks for the report and nice pics. One thing I've learned about chinook is you have to set the hook like you are fishing for Marlin as they have some pretty tough jaws.

I was thinking that this was my problem. I also need to buy some better hooks. I may go back up next weekend depending on the reports and weather.

ChromeJunky... Where is your report? I am curious if you actually landed any.

couple guys I worked with went up there over the weekend. They didn't have anyluck either but they saw some fish caught. They said they were caught on tuna balls? I don't know what a tuna ball is but you might try that.

I do know what that is, but I could not find a can of Tuna anywhere in Challis. Thanks for the info. I will be trying this if I go back up. I am just waiting for the F&G report, others that were there to report, and to make sure the season stays open. I have not caught a Chinook since 95' and I want one on the grill and a few smoked. Very few things in live taste as good as salmon.

"Thats why they call it fishing." Well put. If we were successful all the time especially with the big hard fighting fish we would get sick of fishing.[Smile]
