Well last saturday when I survived the slow cooker on Milner I had a better chance to play with the 480. First off one thing I can say is this unit WILL see fish that are hiding inside milfoil on the bottom. That is something that the 300 could not do. Another thing the 480 does not have the false signals that the 300 did. That is a big bonus. Something I can say this will do that I didn't think of was it WILL see fish to the side. HOW? Well I saw some carp messing in the reeds. I took my transducer and aimed it at the bank and turned the tube. As I got to where the carp were the fish finder alarm went off. One thing was it didn't see them as big fish. But it did sound off when I aimed it at fish that I KNEW were there. I thought that was cool.
When I mounted the 480 I used the transducer from the 300. To my understanding they are the same. From what I have seen the 480 is a winner. Now that is not to say that if I tried an even more expensive and better model I would like the 480 better. I am saying that for a new guy using a FF I will recommend the 480. It will cost a few dollars more but it is worth it. Ron

Give us a battery consumption comparision between the 300 and 480.

Thats some good stuff Ron. Looks like your new FF
is a good unit. I still have the 300 but as soon as I can i will replace it.
One question for you-If the trasduser is the same, that
means that the plug (into unit) with the battery cord and
everything is the same as well. That should be easy
install then. Right?

I started off with 12.8 volts for the morning. I ended up with 12.7 volts that afternoon. I plugged it in to charge it back to 12.8 and it did that in about 4 hours. The 300 might be a slight less drain but it would be very hard to tell much of any between the two. The 480 sips power.
The only thing I had to do on the install was attach the screen to a new electrical box and put it on my holder, then plug and play. Here is a couple of pictures. Ron
