What is up with the courses? We wanted to let our son take the Hunter Education class during the summer when he wasn't in school. Only problem is that there are almost no classes to take unless we live out in Tooele. Maybe nobody wants the course in the summer but if there are a need for 2 different classes in Tooele then there probably is a need for at least one Utah county class.

Second I've been waiting for the 2009 extended Archery course to start. Could never find anything to study so I took the test to see what I needed to learn. Got 100 percent on the first try. Good for me but I really think it should cover a lot more. I still know nothing about the hunt but have my completed paper so I can go.

What would you like to know about the hunt?

-The day after the general hunt ends, the extended starts. (You can hunt the front during the general too)
-You can shoot a buck up until the last day in November, after that you can shoot a doe through Dec 10th (I think), but ONLY on the Wasatch extended, NOT Ogden Extended.
-The boundries are available online with detailed maps. Basically you can hunt from Brigham city down to almost Cabelas. (Not exactly sure about the border down there)

What other info do you need?

Take there course online with your son! There are actually a few extra chapters in there, and it's a very good "class". Each chapter you have to get 100% on the test, or take it again. You print off all of your results, and take it to the 1 day class where you watch the videos and take the final test. Then you have your range shooting, and that's it.

Not sure where you were looking to find courses, but here is the link to all of the courses in the Northern area. If you live in or around SLC, they have those listed under the Salt Lake Valley link. As you can see, several classes start the 1st week of August. So you could probably have your son take the course the traditional way if you wanted to.

Thanks for the basic info and I know everything is in the Big Game Guide. I will probably read it a

I was hoping there was a actual course just to help point things out. Sometimes little things in a course help me catch more details then trying to find every thing in the guide.

I think there is an "Archery Ethics" course that the DWR offers to bow hunters. It's not required, but I think it would be exactly what you're looking for. I'll see if I can find out some more info about it for ya [Wink]

Thanks for the link. Yes I did know about the online option. He would just have more fun in a actual class then on the computer. There is no real hurry to pass the class as he missed the deer hunt by less then a week age wise and I don't do much upland game hunting anymore. Just wish he could take it durring the summer break was all without going to Tooele or Salt Lake.

Here's some tips from last year that you might enjoy reading:

I couldn't find that other course.

Here's a link to the Wasatch Extended boundry:

They actually enlarged the area this year and added some great new stuff near park city. You might want to compare this year's and last year's boundry and find out what's new. That would be some great area to hunt for the Rutt. There be monsters up there! [cool]

I just did the online course with my son and it was pretty cool. Then you still have to take a class where they go through most of the stuff you did online and watch a few films and they do a few diffrent exercises with firearms then they shoot. It takes about 6-8 hrs for the class!
