I have seen maps on the ranger station walls that show anglers where to target the lake trout. I know they are now allowing downriggers so people can better target them.
I wish I could remember which station I saw that map in.
I just got back from Shoshone lake and the Lakers were hanging out in 60-80ft of water.

West Thumb has the map.
Fish behind the island(frank) and in west thumb. Its where they get stacked and where the guides usually go for the lakers.

I've fished it over the last 8 yrs...always in June however just after opening day. The west thumb is by far your best bet. 40-50 ft if downrigging early AM-later in day 60-80 ft. We don't use the downriggers in June-fish all the west banks in 20ft of water-gold blue-fox spinners fished as slow as possible - but fast enough to get spinning action. We take home 15-20 every trip. Largest has been 8lbs -smallest just over 1lb. Good luck!
