i have noticed that a lot of fishing that occurs on the Boise River is flyfishing. how will i fare with my spinning reel?

If that is what you fish, then I think you will be fine.
They are two entirely different types of fishing and one can't pick up Fly Fishing in a day.

I have never fly fished although I am working on it...lol

I caught a 21" a 17" and a couple around 12" all rainbows yesterday down by linder. all on worms alone.

I usually don't keep em but a couple of them swallowed hooks and my son mentioned bringing one home so I did.
So we were going to throw them on the BBQ and found that 2 of them had yellow meat which I found strange. So I didn't end up eating them . Anyone find similar fish? Are they unhealthy? .......

I'm not a very good fly fisherman even tho I do try to be on occasion. I use Mepps spinners on my spinning outfits and do fairly good on most rivers.

Also you can get a small float and attach flies behind it. Works good. You fly fisherman can keep you're comments to yourself on this one. [:p]

I will be the first to ask, What makes it Fly Fishing? The gear or the thing at the end of the line (FLY).
Why is it called BAIT FISHING? Gear or what is at the end of the line. Spinner, LURE...etc.......

I know several who use a bubble and fly and HAMMER the fish.
So I say you are fishing a fly....you are FLY FISHING.

I wish Idaho Fish and Game felt that ways . I think in Fly Fishing only waters it is against the law to use a spinning rod and bubble . Curt G.

That just don't make sense, but we won't go there again...LOL

I never realized that before but checking the Regs it does say.....

Fly Fishing: Fishing with fly rod, fly reel, fly line and artificial flies.

So in fly fishing only waters I guess you can't use your spinning outfit with a bobber and fly. But you can do it anywhere else and I have. [fishin]

but does anyone know if the entire boise is "fly-only?"

None of the Boise river is fly only. The Middle fork and South fork have some restrictions in certain areas of no bait and barbless hooks only.

I don't know and as a FLY FISHER ONLY, I don't think that is right.
Our Provo River is for the most part ARTIFICIAL. This means any rod, reel, line as long as it has NO SCENT is legal.

The F.F. only is just not fair...discrimination really.

It's like, I don't smoke but I think the enormous tax they are putting on it and banning it from OUTSIDE AREAS is just crazy.

The invasive species law....CRAZY I mean it is a good thing, just presented all wrong.

Sorry back to the BOISE[Wink]

i do very well using panther martins on the boise river. fly fishing for me is more fun but you can definately catch them on spinning gear just as well
