Has anyone been up tp Pelican in the last few weeks-how is the bug situation, fished it summer last year and it was okay-if you can give me an update I would appreciate it!

I was up there the beginning of July, I bought a bug head cover dealio whatever it's called [crazy] but I never used it. The bass were back in the open pockets in the reeds and the bluegill were everywhere. My two biggest bass came after the wind started blowing and I started fishing open water. Senkos and weedless topwaters worked the best for the bass.
(The date on the pics is wrong, it was actually 07-03-09, I fixed it after[blush])

Thanks for the reply fsh-good to hear the bugs weren't too bad-i love pelican and my uncle who first took me lmb fishing is coming into town and I would love to put him into some larger lmb, he's older now so I just don't want him to be misersble with the bugs. I caught this beauty in the middle of june at pelican so I know they are getting to good sizes at pelican - thanks again for your reply[

I went up with my Son and Nephew last Friday and Saturday. There were very few bugs, even when we went up in the reeds. It was stormy last weekend and the wind always helps keeps the bugs down so maybe we were just lucky. The biggest fish we caught was 15", we caught several in the 13-14" slot. We caught at least 150 bluegill and bass. The 15" was caught out in the open lake, my biggest bass (14") was caught up in the reeds. Talked to one boat that caught a 4# bass, they said it was in the open lake. Drop shot killed, we got bored with it and fished the reeds trying for something bigger.

[#500000]Do they have a pretty good boat ramp at Pelican?......Or is it just for small aluminum and pontoon type boats?..........WW.[/#500000]

They have a nice ramp now, it used to be dirt, you can launch any size bass boat. I forgot to mention the water temp, it was 80 when we got there on Friday. Saturday morning it was 76 and got up to 79 when we left at 1pm.

Get a head net for each of you just in case of bugs, it could make or brake the trip...

That's an incredible bass out of that little pond! Wow! I was there in the spring and want to go back in a couple weeks. We were catching them in the reeds then and I'm not sure how you'd fish the lake out in the middle, are you keying in off any kind of structure or just sort of casting randomly? Also does anyone have a favorite color for this lake? We did really well on purple and black, any advice would really be appreciated!

I was out in the middle upper end of lake over a fairly small submerged island of reeds, at sunrise. I just so happened to try a cinnamon colored 4" lizard, they were all over it. Caught 3 app. 4#, then 5# then this 6.73# it was so cool-but that was in mid June. When I have been there mid summer in past I have always had luck with just about any colored senko- but the other people I fish with used black-gold crank baits and did real well. In the past couple of years it has been awesome to see the size of fish in Pelican-I throw them back so I can see them again next year-and start the fight all over again [cool]
