I have a friend coming to visit from Vegas and he is bringing his 10 year old son who has never caught a fish.

He really wants his son to catch something and I was hoping to take him up into Logan canyon and let him try his hand at fly fishing. The kid has no experience and I am far from an expert but catch a few fish most days I go out. I have never fished the Logan up high but hear it is great.

My question is can I expect to have him catch a few fish. He is bringing his newly purchased spinning reel, but I know he and his dad would prefer to catch some fish on fly poles.

If I end up having to go to hardware do small spinners work up there or should I just take him somewhere else?

Thanks for any advice, I am sure I can figure out some dry fly stuff for myself but want to make sure this kid gets a few fish to hand.

If you are game to catch something other than trout, hit the east bank of Mantua reservoir, bass, bluegill, and perch are super easy on a fly rod there.

That is a great place for a kid to learn to fly fish. I spent alot of my early years up there. If you maybe are looking for a spot, Go to franklin basin any standard dry fly pattern will work. Standard nymphs will work too. The fish are not worried about presentation, or picky about the fly. Sure you will get into many fish. Look forward to report about the area.

Red Banks was one of the first places I caught fish on a fly rod. Put a hopper on the end of his line and it shouldn't be a problem. The only problem there is keeping his fly out of the trees. If all else fails you are only a few minutes from Tony Grove and he can use his spinning reel up there. He could use spinners there but the holes are rather short-plunge pool, drop, plundge pool, drop.

I grew up in Logan, and Redbanks is a blast for catching lots of little Cutts. Have him use a hopper or a caddis. The fish up there are not picky. Fish the pools behind rocks and boulders. you should do fine. You could even drop a size 18 PT off of the dry fly. It is a riot up there!!

Good luck!

So my buddy and his kid are here. Will last night's storm (we had a bit of rain) make it harder to catch fish or should it still be pretty easy?

There are no dams above that area to control the flows so it could have some effect if there was a lot of rain. But I doubt there will be any effect.

Not enough rain to do squat though- let him catch one of the 5# spawner cutts they put in the first dam---- or tie a wet towel to his line- same thing
