[Smile] After a hundred mile hike(4 miles)straight up hill(kind of steep) with a hundred pound pack on my back(30lbs.) we made it to round lake in the Uintas in about 3 hours. The plan was to continue on to Sand lake to camp over night,so we only stayed at round for a couple hours for rest and lunch.Pulled the 2wt. out and made a couple casts for a couple strikes and one grayling. Feeling rested enough we put our 100 pound packs back on and went the 3/4 mile to Sand, rather level hike compared to the first half. Fished a lot different this year than last, not as many fish. last year I would smack a fly on the water so it would make rings and 2 or 3 Grayling would fight to be first to get hooked and just about any fly we threw would work. This year it took me an hour to figure it out. Light presentation,6x tippet,20 or 22 black gnat, let it sit and wait for a couple of shore cruisers to come along. one would always see it and rise up and give me a fight.
caught several fish saturday night and lots on sunday, all grayling. Wife went looking for a nonexisting spring and found a pond on the southwest side of Sand lake. 1acre in size maybe 10ft.deep at max(all the lakes are very clear) so I headed to check it out and caught 2 on it. I doubt there were more than 2 dozen fish in the hole pond.
While there I noticed water running in,hoping it was the spring I had read about I followed it up and found Fish lake.Hoping to catch some Brooke trout I started fishing it and caught a bunch more Grayling. Then it was time to carry that 100lbs. pack back down the hill. Was a lot of hiking for an overnighter, next time I will take a couple days. And there will be a next time!!!

Sounds like a great trip. Last time I was there was in 1999 or 2000. Found cutthroat in round lake willing to bite as much as the grayling there.

Caught Cutts the last 2 years but didn't spend enough time at round to get them this time.

So how are the skeeters up there?

Mosquitoes were not too bad, they were there but with some Cutter on they didn't bother us. The real annoyance was horse flys and a few deer flys but as soon as we started the camp fire they disappeared. Most of the problem was they like to buzz around your head, should have wore a baseball cap. Did hear a strange Growl off in the woods early sunday morning maybe a black bear or Badger or wolverine? (Lions,Tigers and Bears OH MY!!)
Fly Goddess you will have to make the hike up there most all are a little bigger.

No pics on this trip.
