Quick! Somebody please give me a short tutorial on how to fish for walleyes! I'm headed to a walleye lake in Montana on Monday morning, and I've never fished for walleye in my life. I don't have a clue where to begin. Tips and tricks are greatly appreciated. No, we don't have downriggers, and they seem to be staged between 20 and 40 feet down. Lead core? Diving planes? Long line? What would you do? What would you put in front of them? Heeeeeeelllp!

I have been trolling with a worm harness bouncing the bottom at Salmon Falls Creek Res, but you may need to do a drift under a slip bobber or just casting a jig. don't know if you can use minnows there or leeches. Try doing a google search about the lake and see if someone has written a atricle or something.
They should still come in shalow to feed in the early morn or at sunset and through the night.

I've never fished for walleye but did you post this same question on the Montana board? And I have used Jed divers before to get down to forty feet and they seem to work alright. And I've got a Canon Mini troll downrigger that clamps to just about anything, you are more than welcome to use it if you want. Send me a PM if you want to use it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Wish I'd had more time to pick your brains. We went to Canyon Ferry Lake near Helena, Mt. on Monday. Got rained out this morning (Friday) so we came on home. I caught a couple of walleye on a bottom bouncer and worm, but they were pretty small. We did get some nice trout, using lead core line and a pink wobbling lure down about 40 feet. Not my favorite kind of fishing, but it's all good. Saw some different country, and met some pretty nice folks. The lures we caught the fish on, were given to us by some local fishermen. The sport shops we tried didn't have a pink lure left on their racks, so we pretty well got the idea that pink was the go-to color. All-in-all, a pretty good trip.
