So this was about my 5th trip to the Bear River Refuge. I have heard reports and seen pics of large catfish, but I have never had any luck. This evening was a little different.
First of all, the water has dropped way low which makes access better and keeps your bait in the zone better. Second, I begged my wife to go cat fishing. She thinks cat fishing is "stinky fishing," which I don't blame her. Anyways, she decided to come along. It never fails, she always hooks into a hog.
We both caught a few small channels and got lots of bites. Just before dark, her bobber went under again and she hooked it. I thought she a had another teenager until I saw the fish thrash in the water. I never bring my big net, but for some reason I brought it this trip and netted the monster. It was a big channel, probably 10 to 15 lbs. and a few feet long. Very light colorered and healthy. My fist could of fit inside its mouth. She asked if I had brought the camera on the way out, but of course I left it at home. We gave the fish to a very thankful family who seemed very knowledgable on cooking catfish. I guess I have a good reason to keep trying the bear river now!!
