Made the trip down to Preston again last couple of days one was for catfish and the other trip was for a walleye dinner... Done well on both trips catfishing was very good for us. Landed a lot of small ones and got these 2 nice dinner plate sized ones around 23inches.

Went down a couple of days laterz (last night) for the eyes water was nice and calm no wind not to hot or cold loved the day and the fishing.... lots of good sized perch maybe 11ish inches i dont know.... Got five eyes on the day kept these three and one nice 19ish incher great for eats....... Not much moss, water was clearer then i wold of thought it was for this time of yr. Fished from 5pm to 9pm was all.

DANG! you smoked um. Was that the Bear river you fished? Also are those Cats the same ones they release from Alexander Res? Seems like there are too many dams for them to get there. Ron

HEYA mr... I emailed u that pix and many others let me know if you didnt get them........

From what the IDF&G has told me they swim up from Utah...This is a little spot on the bear that is down stream a little from the actual "NARROWS"... Now if only i can figure the walleye's out in that area[crazy] i would be set.... The game officer told me they where doing some survey's down there this yr and got some eyes over the 30inch mark.......[cool]

Did the F&G say how far those cats came into there? We have a Res down here called Milner. It has catfish that are planted. The Idaho power co dumps about 20,000 cats in there a year in the Burley area. Very few are ever caught. I have had the luck to catch 4 so far but all were small. I am thinking that the bigger cats go up stream in the summer when the oxygen is lower in the Res. There are places upstream that have rapids where the water would have more oxygen. More oxygen more bait fish. More bait fish, and more oxygen more cats I am thinking.
I know the cats Move a lot in the snake river. Some research was done in the Weiser area and one fish from that study was tagged in Brownlee, and recovered in Marsing over 100 miles away so they can get out and move.
Do you think that the cats that live there in the area you were fishing stay there year around? I know that is tough to say but do they lets say hit hard after the first of August?
I am learning a lot about river cats here in southern Idaho. And I am just trying to figure them out better. Thanks Ron

Yes there are some big boyz in that streatch i know.. i try not to say to much where i have seen walleye gain popularity and hate to see that get fished out..... but the fish cop did say they are in the works to making some changes down that way but im affraid once they do people will start asking Q's and find out just where it is and starts getting fished harder and harder[pirate]

dude, you are about 8 years late to start worrying about that

every time i see the fish and game officer from franklin county. (Cory?) i ask him if they are going to do anything i usualy get some dumb responce like when the cutthroat recover in that area. We all know that the lower streatch of the bear river will never carry the cutts that maybe it once did if it ever did, and the walleye are a fish that if promoted and regulated could be an amazing fishery. But if they simply slap a limit on them i dont think its enough i would like to see a season like the one up in the damn. I would like to see a gap like say you can keep 2 per year over 28 inches or even c&R over 30 after all you can always get a mount by a pic. But i think if they prmote the walleye they need to plant walleye also.

I'm with you all the way jigs especially on this mounting deal. If you know anything about mounted fish, you'll know that without a good picture, good measurements, and a real good fish artist, regular mounts are no better than replicas.

I'll take it one step further, we absolutley must have a 2 fish limit durring March and April (if not year round). And how bout nothing over 24"? EVER! If 2 14-24 inch walleyes a day won't keep your family from starving. . . . . GET A JOB! There's one hole on the river in particular that gets really out of hand. My buddy and I have toyed with the idea taking a box of steaks down to the hole durring the spawn, and handing out a nice ribeye steak to everybody who releases a walleye [:p].

ya a 2 fish limit would be awsome, and nothin over 24 is a good idea also. I think most the ppl you see taking alot of the eyes home are putting them in a freezer. i only take enough for dinner that night and maybe some leftovers for breakfast. i had one of the regulars who fishes down there invite me over for some walleye just the other day he is one of the big conservatives that say let the big onces go. the way i look at it is if you have enough to stock up tell august your keeping to much. but i still think if they would release some it would help the fishery alot.

i read a newspaper artical of the newyork state record caught last winter ice fishing was like 16 lb 36 inches and they did tests on that fish and said it was anywere from 12-20 years old!!! keeping a fish that old is a shame.

How many times have we talked about this buddy? F&G will never do anything to protect walleye anymore than they already do. And 99% of people who catch a walleye will not release it no matter what size, and no matter what they tell you. Most of them target the walleye in the River during the spawn when the fish is genetically programmed to kill whatever it sees. Then like Jigs said they throw them in there Freezer and cook them in August YUMMY! Nothing like a freezer burned walleye. This is why I don't devote a whole lot of time to this system anymore. ya i agree the fish and game will never do anything but as long as they dont fishing forums like this one will have the same conversation over.. and over again...

I think the only thing that keeps the eyes going is that there are very few public areas to fish for them. other than a couple of places below the narrows, and the narrows there is almost no pressure.

Could not agree more jigs. We all can just do what we can as angler's to preserve them. Take a few to eat know and then, and throw the big ones back! And take it easy on the fish during the spawn, even though some say they can't reproduce, I believe they can. I do believe keeping the smallmouth will also help the walleye population. [fishin]

i know they spawn go down to the farmers that have the pumps along the river and check there screens i know one farmer who has 2 pumps down stream from a well known spawning hole and he has to clean his screens because the minnows actualy restrict the water flow out of it.

i do like the taste of the smallies but the black stringy veins in them bother me a bit anyone have any tips how to get around them other than to deal with it.

The last time I took the boat out on Oneida we caught quite a few walleye about 2 or 3 pounds, alot of nice perch about 12in or so and a few larger smallies. I let go all the walleye and kept about a dozen or so perch and 1 about 2 pound smallie. I am one that gets my fish and gets them on ice right away. I get them cleaned and get them ate but I will tell you what. I got them out to start cleaning the fish and that smallie smelt like I had drug the damn thing behind my truck, and over a pile of crap. The perch were perfect and ice cold. I have no idea what is up with those smallies but I hardly want to touch those things anymore. I dont know how you could even try and eat that.
