Decided to take advantage of the weather and do a little fishing. Arrived at Floyd Lamb about 6:30am. Hit the lowest pond to target some bass. Had 5 Bass landed by 8am. All were under a pound except 1. I think he was about 2lbs but boy he put on a fight!! I was using 6lb test fluoro and I thought he was going to snap it for sure the way he was running... I also gill hooked one of the smaller ones really bad. He bled out in about 1 min flat [:/]. Pulled him out of the water and it looked like I had slit his throat... I was pretty bummed about that so I ended up just giving him to one of the catfish anglers on the top pond. They threw him in the cooler and said they would eat him. About 8:30 I started to see some bluegill so I took out my panfish pole and had a blast with them. Caught about 15. Thats about it for my fishing day.. I was home by 10 am. Here are some pics.
Also on a side note.. I have been noticing that the Bass in the pond really really stick to the 3 small cover spots they have in this pond( they are like really small trimmed tree stumps)..I really think the ponds would benefit a Huge amount from some extra cover for these fish... Do you guys think its worth trying to contact the park service to see if we can get some cover thrown in there? These bass have no place to hide out and I think it really affects the size and amount of fish that are caught there..
I think Floyd lamb has the potential to be a really good bass fishery if they would just dump some damn trees in these empty water holes!

Last summer/fall when I used to go almost every day they usually open the gate at around 5am for maintenance crews. The ol' timers use hot dog and marshmallow on a j hook and magic chicken liver blood on a treble on the other hook. Don't use too big of hooks because the catch fish like to feel it some times before they bite. I also like to take a bobber that is attached to a paper clip and put on my line and hang it down with slack so when the fish bite the bobber goes up. I think this helps give the kittys some slack sothen they run and then there is no more slack and they set the hook for ya.Early in the morning is when the the cat bite is best.

Ya.. I didnt find out until about a year ago when I was talking to an Old timer that they actually open the gates at sunrise. If you get there before 7:30am the gatehouse is closed and you wont get charged to get in.
As for tips on fishing floyd lamb..
Bass hit early in the summertime at floyd lamb. Best times to catch em are from sunrise til about 10 am and Later in the day from 6pm to closing. I have thrown a bunch of different baits out there and have narrowed it down to a few things that work. Small spoontype lures such as a small 1/4 oz Kastmaster works well when the pond level is high. When the water is low it does not work so well due to all the muck and stuff to get snagged on. Also small 3-4 inch senkos texas rigged weighted and weightless. Colors that work are black, pumpkinseed and Watermelon seed. I also like to throw 4 inch and 7 inch Powerworms texas rigged with small weights for a slower fall. Colors of these worms that have worked for me are Tequila Sunrise, Black, Black with the chartreuse tail and once the sun gets a bit brighter I use the color "Camo"..... Also the best pond to catch bass at floyd lamb is the lowest tier.
Just remember to catch and release all the bass you catch at Floyd lamb. There numbers are small. The more we throw back. The more we will have to catch in the future.
If you want to catch bluegill use a really small size 12 baithook under a bobber with a 12-18 inch leader. You can use redworms, mealworms, and waxworms. Bluegill tend to be more active from 11am-closing.
They stock trout during the winter months at floyd lamb bi-weekly and Catfish during the summer monthly in the upper pond only.

I guess its not just you and it is slow for every one lately. I only caught one and had one other bite when I went the other day. The one I caught was 5lbs. My first big cat Ive caught from there. I wanna try bass fishing there some time but never learned how from any one.

I snagged a couple 8" large mouth bass from larger pond 8/17/09, using the black fury #1 size spinner with orange dots. I put them on the catch and release program of course.
I was also getting some hits on nightcrawlers, but they where damn crafty fish, not easy to hook. They stripped many single hooks and then i switched to treble hooks and was picked clean twice. I was casting way out in the middle off to the side of the reeds so not to sure what was picking me clean, catfish or bass. I just went back to spinner bait after the second stripping of my treble hook.
There was a family of about 6 catching a decent amount of catfish out of the big lake near the reads.

I would almost guarantee that the really small bluegill were stripping your hooks of the worms. Happens to me all the time using size 10 hooks(ridiculously small) with worms. The mouths on those fish are so small they just tear away little pieces of worm and cant get the hook in there mouths.
Btw welcome to the boards Jimmy =)

I was kind of thinking it was bluegill also but I was casting pretty far away from shore. Do bluegill hang out in deeper waters? A couple of the pole hits where somewhat violent also. It very well could have been bluegill though. I went ahead and caught a couple later that day for fun. They are in there.

I have also heard that those turtles went to school with the bluegills at learning how to be sneaky. I always see my pole get a little nibble and only to find out it was a turtle. You can see their little bite marks in the hot dog. When I catfish I like to check my bait every 15 mins to make sure those crafty turtles didnt get my bait.
