Just got home from Floyd Lamb again and I think I am going to have to take a break from fishing for a week or 2...
You know that feeling when you hook into a fish so big you feel like you won the lottery? Well today I had a moment like that.. the day started out slow.. caught 2 dinks right off the bat.. maybe 1/2 lb at most. Then the fishing got really slow so I decided to go to grab some grub then get back to fishing but this time for some bluegill. After about an hour of bluegill fishing the couple that had been fishing in my favorite bass spot have moved on so I decided to start fishing there under the shade of a nice big tree. I pulled out my tackle box and started to rig up a texas rigged 4'' powerworm. For some stupid reason I decided not to use the same hooks I had been using the last couple trips out there (Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG) and to downsize because the bigger hooks seem to gill hook and gut hook more often than the smaller size 1/0 hooks. The smaller size seemed to lip hook the fish better.. So I tied on the smaller hook and put the worm on and tossed it out.. As I was working my bait on the bottom slowly I felt a little pressure. So I let it deadstick for a second and didnt feel any pull. So I pulled the pole ever so slightly to see if I was caught on a rock and I felt a slight pull, so I set the hook.. Damn it!! Im snagged!!...or so I thought...As I go to let pressure off the pole to relieve the snag , the pressure stays on.. All of a sudden she runs with it!! let me tell you this.. I have caught a few 5+ pounders and I have never felt a fish pull like this in my life, Hell I caught a 15 lb striper that didnt pull like this fish....The way this fish looked when she came out, she had to have been pushing 8+ lbs. My heart started beating a million miles per hour as I try to set my drag a little better for this big fish. Some guy runs over to me in a panic and says he will lip it for me if I need the help lol.. I tell him sure... this frickin fish fought me forever!! Felt like 10 minutes. He broke the water 3 times at the surface.. He was a monster. I got him about 5 feet from shore and he went airborne one more time in a last effort and snap!! I went into instant depression.. I seriously thought I was gonna have a panic attack lol. So i sit down and the guy who was gonna help me tells me it happens to every bass fisherman at least a couple times in their lives trying to comfort me [:/]. So im sitting there thinking about what had just happened and I get up to investigate my snapped line. I look at the line and the hook was still attached.. as I look at the hook I noticed something.. It had been bent straight!! I couldnt believe it! I downsize hooks to be less harmful to these bass and I get the shaft because of it.. Moral of the story..I am leaving hooks smaller that 3/0 at home and its 10 a.m and I need a beer...
