I went to Ririe today for a few hours in the evening and didn't do too terrible. I ended up landing 5 small smallmouth bass. I was fishing around the boatdock...

I did see a fairly large kokanee swim pass me underneath the dock. He was in his full spawning colors. He was BRIGHT red with a very green head. It was the first time I'd seen a kokanee in spawning colors.

Does anybody know if more kokanee will tend to get closer to the dock as the season moves along?

Also, what should I throw at them to try to get them to hit? I have NEVER caught a koke, and am eager to catch one in it's full spawning colors! It would make for a great picture!

ANY help would be appriciated!

some of the kokanee actualy spawn in the lakes rather than going into the streams but like any othe salmon they dont eat so you have to trigger a strike, i have cought them on spinners, flys, and yarn during the spawn.

Within a couple weeks there will be hundreds of spawners near the boat ramp. Last year there were so many you could pick them up with your hands.

They don't really bite during the spawn, but you might be able to get them to snap at something.

In the. past we have targeted the Willow Creek arm. We used orange and silVer spinners. We don't keep them but enjoy the fight. The wife and I have caught so many that we quit as our arms couldn't take it any more[cool]

If that is the case this year, it looks as if I am going to be getting my first Koke!!! I'm pretty excited to see them all stacked up like that!!!

Since there will be so many fish by the boat ramp, will there be combat fishing because of this? (Like at Henry's Lake on opening weekend...)

bigger trouble is usually all the boats stacking up at the dock to load and unload. There are usually a handful of fishermen at standard times (evening and weekends) but not combat fishing.

Windriver -

Which boat dock were they at last year? Juniper or blacktail?

I saw them at both. Landed some at Juniper, didn't try too hard at Blacktail though. Attached a pic of one I landed last year.
