ok, im going to post this before dad beats me to it lol
Hit up strawberry today, got there about 7am, it was pouring, but stopped shortly after we got there. Hit up the area straight across from strawberry bay marina. After a bit of vertical jigging doing no good, dad decided to put on a repala and caught one and was missing others. SO, kait (my 12 year old daughter) decides to put a repala on. I changed my tube jig to white and caught a slot size cut and released it. Oh about 10 am, kait hooks into a ..........ME. Had to go to the ER and have a hook removed from my ear lol, that was fun.
Once that was done, decided to go back. I didnt catch any more, but kait caught 2, one being this pretty fish seen below. It was 21 1/2 inches and 3.3 lb. Mom says its a cut, but sure dont look like one to me. Pretty anyhow. Dad caught a total of 4 all day. His biggest was 20 1/2 inches and 3.5 lb. All in the slot, all got to swim again.
Not too bad i guess seeing how we had to take a short break lol
oh, and stopped by the trap, for those of you interested, there are quite a few fish in there.

Should have got ahold of me,did pretty good in a spot by the ladders,we caught twice that many on pearl tubs tip with chub meat in about 45 minutes, there really staked up over there. the wind kicked up so we headed for soldier creek and I got in a bay and caught rainbows on the same jigs about six before we went in for the BBQ.
Bet that hurt like a _____________!
[signature]
well, actually wasnt too bad. After we came back from our "break" we went over to chicken creek and then to jakes bay, kait caught her biggest one right at the opening of jakes bay. Then with the wind and the boat having issues, we decided to call it a day. As we were pulling out, the wind stopped. [mad]

Ouch !! [pirate] Thats why you should bend the barbs of your hooks it would have saved you a trip to the Dr. Plus it helps release those slot cutts easier.Glad you did catch some fish . [

The only time I have been to strawberry was for the DAV event, what is the TRAP??? Nice fishing and your daughter got the big catch of the day YOU. Good luck on your next outing and hopefully you wont get caught anymore. See you on the water sometime....
[signature]
the kokanee trap. Right at the visitors center as you turn off to go to strawberry bay or renegade. where they strip the kokes. Hatchery. yea i told her on the way to the hospital she caught the biggest one of the day. She was pretty upset about it, dont think she thought it was too funny at the time lol
[signature]
So those were kokes in the trap, then what do they do with them after stripping the eggs, are they released in the lake then.... thanks for the info, I had no idea about the trap...
[signature]
I suppose they release them back but as with all salmon, they die right after spawning.

[cool][#0000ff]Painful report. Ouch. If you really wanna have some kind of fishy type earrings, let me know your favorite colors and I will make you some like in the picture.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]On the other hand, if you had been a real trooper, you would have cut out a hunk of that ear and let Kait use it for bait. Those carnivorous cutts probably would have really smacked it. Kinda wimpy to stop a fishing trip to have a hook removed...unless it was your last hook.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]By the way, that fish is DEFINITELY a cutt. Pretty fish, but I suggest that you not hold it on a hook in the gills if you are releasing it. Not good for the fish.[/#0000ff]

Nice report. Seeing that hook in your ear brings back memories[:/] When I went to Alaska we were jigging off the pier and my cousin hooked me in the Nose with a 1oz Blue Fox jig. He didn't know I was hooked so he actually reeled in a few cranks[pirate] After we stopped at the clinic and removed my new "Nose Ring" we went back to finish out our limits. About 15 minutes into fishing again I had one shake my hook out and the lure flew behind me and hit my Mom in the forehead[pirate] Another trip to the clinic, $500.00 and 20 stitches in my Moms head ended our day of fishing. Still brings a
to our faces every time I ask my Mom if she wants to go fishing with me[

They strip the females and milk the males and like he said, they die after they spawn so I am not sure what they do with them after.
[signature]
Sounds like they should donate them to a food bank/homeless shelter while they are still edible... thanks for the info......

I know, Im a wimp. I was going to try to pull it out, but as soon as I looked at it in my ear and seen how it was in there, i was like heck no. THEN the Dr tried backing it out, even with my ear being numb, i felt that. THEN he gouged up the back of my ear with another barb trying to get the other one out lol. That actually was more sore than the original hole, which is closed and you cant see anymore.
I know, we should have helped her hold it. She has a hard time holding onto the fish so I took a pic while she was weighing it. Dads big one that he caught was a brownish color, all of them had rosy gill plates, are they spawning?
[signature]
They actually change colors because they are rotting from the inside out, so I dont know how good they will be lol. I dont know, never tried em.

I guess that shows you how much I know about trout/kokes. Dav event was first time for trout in over 25yrs......... thanks again...

[#008000]Ouchy ... Were you looking for an Industrial piercing ? Maybe you can put a bolt through it and look trendy now.[/#008000]
[#008000][/#008000]
[#008000]As was mentioned and is a good reminder for folks that safety when fishing should always be a concern. When swinging rods, lines, hooks, and other potential damaging things, try to always remember to wear protective eye glasses. Not only is there a possible danger from the casting by the angler or fishing partner, but sometimes the fish or a snag can cause a hook to fly right back unexpectedly and out of control at the anglers. [/#008000]
[#008000][/#008000]
[#008000]Also, as Ocean wrote, barbless hooks sure make the extraction easier - from the fish as well as the angler.[/#008000]
[#008000][/#008000]
[#008000]BTW - That's a nice cutthroat that Kait caught.[/#008000]
[signature]
yea, i asked if i could put an earring in now, but it wasnt all the way through the ear, just kinda sideways on the skin.
Kait definately knows now why I keep telling her to WATCH where shes swinging that thing lol. Hopefully she does WATCH from now on. Good thing it was just my ear, could have been worse.

They use to just dump them back behind the fish stripping station, but it was bring down the bears. So now they get ground up for mink food and the such. They sell or trade the roe to other states for other favors.
So I was told a few years back by the DWR

You did the correct thing by going to the ER. DON'T EVER try to remove a hook like that; that job belongs to medical personnel. Did you get a tetanus shot?
Nice cutt, BTW.
[signature]
nah im a wimp. Took one look at it and was like "oh no, not getting that out". Its still sore today, brushing my hair, itching it, sends me jumping. Yep got tetnus shot, hadnt had one since high school, so figured better. Nurse says "OK, thats good for 10 years now, you can get as many hooks in you as you'd like" i was like "ill pass"
They said they take hooks out daily during the summer. Not surprised seeing how it was the medical center in Heber. So if anyone gets hooked up by there, go to the IHC hospital in Heber, they're really experienced lol
