All this talk of smallmouth and walleyes made me want to go catch some. So I lugged the tube up to Oneida. Usually I fish the river, but for some reason the lake sounded fun today. I got a late start and didn't make it onto the water until 11:30. The sun was hot and the water was glass. I had about a 12" smallie whack a wally diver, but he jumped and flung it right at the tube. The next cast another fish of the same size whacked it and missed right at the tube. Then it quieted down. They quit hitting cranks, so I went for something a bit more subtle. I caught a smaller bass, and then a green sunfish. I didn't know they were in there. I started fishing over a deeper weed bed and felt the slightest tap. I set the hook and brought in a walleye. After that, I was getting some hits and occasionally catching a small bass or a sunfish. I worked my way down to a rock slide and caught about a 12" smallmouth on a drop shotted YUM Dinger. I worked my way back catching a couple more small bass, and a dinky sunfish that was all of 3 inches. How he managed to get hooked on a 4" dinger, I'm not sure. I decided to switch to a Gulp! Minnow and lobbed it up by a fallen tree. Bam! Finally a good fish, it bent my rod double and didn't want to give up. It was quite the little fatty. I caught a few more little sunfish and bass, and then it was time to go to work. I ended up with 1 walleye, 9 bass, and 10 sunfish. Not super fast, but I guess it was high noon on a very bright and calm day.

Thats a healthy looking smallmouth, and the usual looking walleye out of there. Sounds like you had fun!! Good work, I think I am going to make a trip up there in the morning. If I do I will let you know how it went[fishin]

Way to go on your Smallie. Nice healthy one! Did you get any pics of those sunfish? I have never caught any in there. Were they bluegill?? I'm thinking of fishing it this weekend...still in search of that 32" eye!lol

I've been catching small bluegills right of the maple grove camp site right on the rocky corner about 25ft deep.....

I didn't get a pic, they were actually green sunfish. They have a bigger mouth than the bluegill, so they tend to attack the larger plastics I use for the bass and walleye. They must be through the entire system as I've caught a ton down below Cutler too.

Never caught one in these waters. Did they happen to look like one of these? The Crappy I caught under that bridge as you go to Cutler. The Bluegill at Twin.

No, they looked like these pics here. So I'm probably going to hit The Bear tomorrow in a stretch between Preston and The Narrows. I was planning on chasing some smallies, but some big walleye would be fun too. Any suggestions on what the river eyes are likely to be hitting about now? I plan on releasing them.

Oh my heck!! I've been catching them and thinking they were Bluegill. I guess the Bluegill have vertical stripes and Green don't? Here's a photo I found of my son with one under that Cutler bridge. I'm a bit

on which is which.

Yep, that's a green. They have a bigger mouth and aren't as flat and round. More of a thick elongated body. I don't think they fight as hard as bluegill, but they can save you from boredom when the bass are slow. They really seem to like the same rocky shoreline structure as the smallmouth.
