My adult children and I were planning day at Mirror Lake. My Pac 80. My daughter in a my second Pac 80 with new Disdovery 8 toons and my son in what call his "Lead Canoe" Im not kidding this thing is heavy almuinimun and is 15 feet long. I was rigging a new rod holder on my Outcast Pac 80 and was using some very large and strong Tie Straps. I got talking to a neighbor was not looking at what my son was doing, bless his heart. He thought he was helping me, got out a box cutter to cut of the excess ends of the tie strap.
Yep you guessed it. 3" slice into the left toon cover and urathane bladder. The first thing that came to mind was I hope the "OH SHIT" I heard was not becaue he was hurt. Then I just stood there and watched the toon deflate quite rapidly. Then my thought was oh how bad must the feel. I know when I have done things like that how bad I feel. You call tell them is ok and we can get it fixed a million times but the sick feeling he has will last a while im sure.
I know I have a repair kit but its been years since I used this boat and have no idea where it is.
I am in unfamiliar territory here. My questions are these. Is a 3" slice too big to patch? Is it less likeley to be a successful repair than say a hole or puncture? Is the toon still going to be safe to use when repaired? Do I need a some specifically made for polyurathane? Can I it here locally in Utah. And how do I patch the outer cover so it does not come apart?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Ok airfilled bubbles and sharp objects don't mix!!!![crazy]
There is a product that can be used. Sportsmans has it with their waders, Aquaseal. Not sure if the slice might be too big or not. We are going to need more expertise on this one.

How about calling the factory and telling your story? They can tell you if it can be repaired by yourself, or how much they would charge.

[cool]Accidents...by definition...are things that happen unplanned. And, when you are an angler...and/or a tuber or tooner...accidents seldom work to our advantage.
First, the good news. The slice is probably repairable and should hold once repaired.
The "bad news" is that I do not know anywhere locally that sells the product you need. It can be bought online through [url "http://www.patchngo.com/shop.html"]http://www.patchngo.com/shop.html[/url]
You will need "option C"...the piece of repair material 3" X 10". Then you will use about half of that...cutting it to 5" X 3". This stuff makes an instant patch and the bond continues to grow stronger over time. Works great. And, once the bladder is back inside the toon, and is forced against the cover, under pressure, it is as strong as the original bladder.
Yes, you should also repair the slit in the cover, not only for appearance sake but to restore strength and support over the cut in the bladder. You can simply Aquaseal both sides...inside first...while you have the cover off. Put a good wide patch on the inside, where it is not visible. Then, when that cures, run a small bead over the outside just to eliminate the potential for snagging. It dries clear so it will not be highly visible.
You are welcome to bring your ride over to my place for any part of the repair. Also, if you would like, I can add your patch kit to an order I need to make also. Just used the last of my patch material to help out a fellow tuber.

Tubedude, I feel so much better now since reading your reply. It may take a little longer for my son Mike to get over it. He is such a great guy, I feel bad he feels so bad, but when hes ready to get over it he will. Probally when we come back today limited out!
Thank you for your offer. I will take you up on it. The expertice will be greatly appreciated and more important than that, Id like to meet you. If you will order me the kit with your order and let me know when you have it I will come over. I read your post last Friday and understand and feel for your loss. Good thing its only stuff and no one got hurt! [
]
Thanks again. Will let you know how we did today.

[cool][#0000ff]I truly hope that your son can properly file this memory and bring it up only to laugh at himself...not to beat himself up over the situation. I think all of us make mistakes that overwhelm us with shock and embarassment at the time. The key is to realize that they WERE accidents and that they should be treated as learning experiences...to help us think things through more thoroughly before simply acting on an impulse.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I sympathize with your son because I have had my share of world-ending catastrophes...which turned out to be far more traumatizing to me than to the ones who suffered the results of my blunders. In fact, I have had recurring nightmares throughout my long life about things that happened MANY years ago, when I was just a kid. And, most of the things I still cringe at remembering were kinda silly and harmless. But, they made a huge impression upon me at the time and they are impossible to completely delete from my database. Funny how the mind works.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I also look forward to meeting you...especially if I can indeed help put your ride back in working order. I am optimistic that it is quite repairable, with the proper materials and procedures.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]You are right about the destroyed tube. Only stuff. A speedbump in the road of life. Much easier replaced than damaged body parts.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Good luck. Hope you guys hammer the fish.[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Thanks Peter. I enjoy being able to help others and to share some of what I have learned...both from my own experiences and from the generosity of others. [/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Pay it forward.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I am sure we would enjoy each others' company..especially on the water. Just don't try to shake my hand when I am getting a bite.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]We were toying with the idea of still trying to make it up to Salmon Falls Creek this September but life is getting in the way of our plans. Will let you know if we can work it out and we can PM each other with details.[/#0000ff]

I am glad to hear that a slice like that is repairable.

I think it is very very cool that your primary concern is not about the 'toon, but instead about how your son is taking it.
You are the kind of dad I wish I'd had.

Thanks for the kind words michaelnel. I learned from my dad and grandfather that family is way more important than things. Things come and go but familys are glue that hold life together.
Its no biggie, its just stuff.
Mike and I had a great day on Washington Lake today. A good day fishing just seems to melt away the problems of the days leading up to it. The toon issue is forgotton and we talked about all the days and all the fish yet to come.
The temp was perfect, wind was gusting to oh maybe 40. did not get much use of the fly rod, but an Adams Wolf and bubble got the job done. Tigers, Bows and Brookies, young planters mostly.
A mom and her young son Seth stopped to talk. Up from SLC for the day to let her son fish a little. He was shy at first but warmed up quickly when we help him re rig his pole with bubble and an Elk hair caddis he had in his box. Second cast he caught his Second ever fish, a small albino. Was so fun to see him
.
Had a sandwich, fished a little more caught a few more and then the wind really came up about 2 pm. Packed up, stopped and the Uinta Drive in and had a shake.
Very Good Day.

Don't know if I am late or if we could meet up to get some, but many years ago I boat this TAPE made for urethane.
You lay it on, rub with a nickel or something with a smooth side and it WELDS to the urethane.
Funny thing, I have two rolls in my boat bag, but my boat is bladderless which means the tape no longer works for me.
The tape is awesome however. About 2" wide and on a roll like packing tape. Rubbery. And YES IT WORKS. My hubby found this out.

They still make this? I am interested just because I hace eurethan bladders and wouldn't mind picking some up for an emergency kit of some sort.

Flygoddess, thanks for the info. Tubedude just ordered me a kit with his order to get his ride back up to speed. He has also offered his help in the repair and came up with the idea to take some pictures of the repair and make a short "how to" to post. Good idea.
Thanks again for all of the advise and help from everyone here.
