UPDATE: Ok I fished Henry's for the first time ever, what a ball!!! Was a little slow figuring out where to fish and with what, but by the end of the day was hamering the brookies. A lot of people got skunked and was slow in a lot of places, but watching the boats, some hit it well others not. The fly fisherman right off the State Campground boat ramp did well to the right, and thats where i got most of mine. I dont know what they were using but they were doing pretty good with what every they were using. I swithched to a silver and chartruse swedish pimple and about every 5 casts got either a stong hit or landed a good size brookie. Ended up with one nice cut and 1 nice brookie.

One family was bank fishing just to the left of the boat dock there and they werent there for 10 minutes and landed 3 huge cuts, looked like hogs, right from the bank. My wife said one family who left that same spot just before them was there over 3 hours and didnt as much as get a bite. Thats how goofie the day was.

Any how, what a great day, ill be back.

One ironic thing that I have to comment on is the boat wash station. You get this tag that is good for 30 days saying you have washed your boat. Well, if you go to invested waters in the mean time and come back to Henry's in that 30 day time frame all you do is show your boat wash pass and you dont have to wash it again. How rediculous is that? You can still infect the waters at Henry's from other waters because you dont have to wash every time you enter that lake. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. Either wash everytime or not at all anywhere.

Just had to make this comment.

Good luck to everyone.

Sorry, wasn't this forum ( he got tired of the Bill Schiess bashing here)
I don't know why it isn't on his blog, but he has some killer pictures on another forum.

NICE FISH by the way.

How true
A certain know-it-all (& God's gift to Henry's Lake and Idaho) poster last year was bashing Bill Schiess, So Bill and Lynn decided they didn't need that for trying to help out people with questions about the lake.
Can't say I blame them either.

that's really too bad. After reading Bill's book I really wanted to spend more time at Henry's. The info they provided was definitely worthwhile and the kind of stuff I wish more people were willing to share.

Hello All,
I wanted to report that on Friday morning, a friend and I went to Henry's lake to fish and man, I had a blast. I am very new to fishing and my skills and knowledge are limited. Please be patient with my ignorance of terms and location.
We put in around 730am. The county dock through a little campground. It was really windy and we found a spot that had about 6 boats and two float tubers. I setup my fly rod with an indicator and 5ft down i had a copper john and brown/red leach pattern on the end. The fishing seemed a little slow for the first 1.5 hours as collectively I saw about 3 caught amongst all of us. I heard some of the fishermen complaining about the windy night and how murky the water was. Our boat drifted out of place (really windy, we setup two anchors the 2nd time) so we trolled up to water around 8 feet deep. Iike I said, I am a newbie so I always question my presentation with the fly rod. I grabed my spin rod and tossed out a worm with a split shot about 2 ft up the line. Bamn! landed an 18" brookie, amazing....I did not expect to land such a big fish.
I switched back to my fly rod being content catching one on a worm. I got 3 hits and missed. Then I had huge hit, a big one that made my fly pole bend down hard! then it was gone...no pull. I retrieved my line and saw that my line/knot had failed. This is the second time I lose a fly at henry's to a fish. Like I said I am fairly new to fishing so my knot tying stills aren't perfected for sure.
The next leach I tied on did not get any hits for the next hr. I am also not really good at fly casting so I was really trying to get my roll cast perfected with the wind at my back it was difficult to do the overhead cast. I heard the other fisherman talking about having a bead head and a Renegade. I had the bead head but not sure what a renegade was until I had google at home. I dont know what order they would tie them in a tandem setup. I tried the retrieving method and speed I saw them doing. Seems like they cast out and then pull in the line in short quick strokes. Wasnt really working for me. Others just left there line sit out there with indicators. I was really surprised to see everyone using fly rods. most of the fishermen left after 2 hrs probably cuz of the wind and from what I heard was way slower then thursday.
I switched back to the worm and landed 2 more 14" cuthroats then a I landed a huge 24" hybrid. It was great! This ended our day around noon, my friend landed some big cutthroats. We each landed 5 for the day (released 3 each of course). It was awesome.

I can't wait to some day land some of these hogs on a fly rod.

Hopefully next week....

Sounds like a great trip! if it makes you feel better, I'm not new at all to fishing and it took me a 3 trips to henry's lake before I even caught a fish (though in my defence the first two times I didn't have much time to fish [:/])!
I couldn't decide where to go fishing this morning, I was debating between henry's and PalliSades. Unfortunately I think I chose wrong, I only got three cutties and a monster utah chub.
Thanks for the report and welcome to the forum, and fishing in general!

Great report. Did you get any pics of the fish you caught? Would love to see them if you did.

Thanks for the report. I was at Henrys on Sat. morning. It started off hot as I caught three 20" cutthroats in three casts as I kicked over to a hole off of the state boat ramp. I was using a light olive crystal bugger. Then I couldn't buy a bite. It was very frusterating as I watched two boats that were on the hole before I could get there catch brookie after brookie... When I left at 10:00 AM I had caught the three cutts and they had caught 26 in one boat and 33 in the other. They were nice and offered to give me the marabou jig they were using. I didn't think it would cast very well on my five weight so I just had to sit back and laugh as it was obvious were the hole was and were it wasn't.

On a side note a small jon boat pulled up and started casting and trolling right inbetween the two boats that were catching fish. When the boat finally left I told them they had more patience then I would have had. As there wasn't more than 100ft between the two boats.

Windriver....A 5 Weight?! What the heck are you thinking?
6 or 8 for this kid, but I do use 6 lb fluoro or 3 X. And I do use glass.
[signature]
I was using 3X Tippet with 6 Weight Type II Line.

I've only hooked two fish at Henrys that I couldn't handle with my 5 weight, but I probably should use a bigger rod for that once in a life time chance that I hook the big one.

It is a picture from a cell phone. Sorry, new to cropping so I figured I would just eliminate my face. This is the Hybrid, it was a fighter for sure. It circled the boat once and ran out a couple of times to tire out.

I know what you mean about finding the right hole. and how dead it can be for the next boat only 50ft away....Since I don't own a boat I am new to this fishing this year, I feel very lucky to have caught this huge fish.
plus the huge brookie.

sorry for the quality of the pic.

As the weather continues to get colder and the days shorter the fishing will continue to get better. If you have a boat the easiest way to catch fish for people new to using a flyrod is to troll for them.

Get Bill Schiess book so you know where the holes are this time of year. Then get a sinking line. I like using a type III or IV for trolling. Troll the flies way behind the boat and very slow. Sweep the rod tip forward a few inches as the boat trolls. This will give the fly more action and is easier to learn than stripping.

If there is any wind set your boat up at the top of the hole and just drift your flies throught the hole and then run to the top again.

Thanks windriver,
I had no idea you can troll with a fly rod...
I have a cheap fly combo and tons of flies. I have borrowed a small boat and I have been successful trolling rapalas at Blacktail and also have trolled worms in Gem Lake. I usually put 3 split shots on the worms and get really good results on Gem Lake. When the wife and I anchor up, I use a hopper and copper john combo on my fly rod with no luck so I always end up going back to reliable worms. I am really convinced my fly rod presentation is bad, the hole that I anchor up at in at gem lake is about 5-8 feet deep.
I wonder if I am not sinking my flies deep enough....

Thanks for the suggestion and will check library for the book on henry's for sure. Thanks for your help and suggestions...

Nice pic of that cutbow! I caught a similar one last year that just about caused my buddy to choke when he saw it (being from Nebraska he used to think stockers here were big trout[Image: bobwink.gif]). They really are fun when you can find them up there.

I'm curious about what area in Gem you troll and what you are catching. If you are willing to share info PM me and I'm willing to reciprocate if it's an area different than the hole I usually fish there.

Match, they are picky on the flies you use though.
The BIG cutts are not cannibals, or so I have been told. They don't eat other fish. I think the Rapala's work because they appear as a threat or something.
Just going off what I have been told.

Flies are going to be leeches, snails, seasonal bugs, scuds and chironomids.

I have also learned, up there, BIG flies don't necessarily mean big fish. The biggest fish I have caught out of there are on maybe #12 Nymphs, with several on a #14 Scud hook.
