Do rusty hooks make a difference on a crankbait? Just found one in a tackle box that I don't remember having. Not sure why, but both hooks are rusted but still feel sharp.

every good fisherman sharpens their hooks.
if you dont have a hook sharpener use steel wool..

but get the rust off your hooks.

keep them sharp or you will lose alot of fish.

If it's one of your favorite lures, change out the treble. I always keep a few spares in the box for that or when they break off.

If I had a dollar for every fish I caught on a old, rusty hook, I could buy that new 26' Mako Center Console i've always wanted.

As long as your hooks are sharp, the rust doesn't matter so much. You can have sharp hooks that have rust on the shank.

My main concern would be how deep the rust is. Surface rust means nothing. But, if the rust has dug into the shaft or bend of the hook, then the rust will weaken the hooks strength. If you have any dought, what so ever, change out the hooks.

Thanks all. I guess I'll just change out the hooks to be sure. Not worth losing fish! Thanks.

Hooks are cheap enough to replace. They aren't one of those things worth chancing.

My other concern would be the increased risk of infection if I ended up puncturing my hand with a rusty hook than a not rusted one.

That's my worry as well. I worry more about hurting myself than I do loosing the fish. But I prefer to just change the hook just in case. As aku stated, they're really not that expensive to change and it takes seconds to do so. so why not?

Rust on a hook dose matter.

[ul][li]it makes getting bait on the hook more difficult.[/li][li]it requires more power to set the hook in to a fishes jaw[/li][li]it retains any unwanted sents and holds bacteria that will cause serious infections besides the lock jaw you can get from getting poked by a rusty nail.... [/li][/ul]Clean it or replace it...

if your in a bind, you can scrape as much rust off with a knife or quarter, find something... its to your benifit to use unrusted equipment...

Soak it in Coke or Pepsi, should get most of that rust off.
I always have luck with red hooks. They are suppose to be good because they make the fish look bloody

All my GOODNESS!!!! Worst mistake any fisherman can make especially hooking into the lunker of life time is to have rust on the hook.... It will completely desentegrate the hook and break off imediately... Change out the hooks or buy new crankbait....
