Took my friend Eric for his very first FF trip to Santa Ynes River. Now its not much of a river, more like small
green pools of water but small to mid. fish are in it.
Green sun fish and small bass (no trout now, to hot).
Also we seen a carp about 30'' (huge) but no luck .
So, my body Eric gets his fly line in water (first time ever)
and hooks a very nice fat green sunfish in like 15 seconds into it !!!!!!!!!!!!( on popper)
He goes like-man I love fly fishing, this is the best ever!!![
]
Over all he caught about 10-12 fish from 4'' to maybe 8''
Me abut 25 fish from 2'' to about 12'' (bass and sunfish).
It was hot as hell (100F+) but who cares, we are getting
fish on the fly !
Next time out its going to be float tubing. He should have
all his tubing stuff in next couple of days. Cant wait.

The only legal part of SY you can fish is from Lake Chacuma up. No fishing from the ocean to Lake Chacuma because of steelhead run that they are
trying to protect.

Yes, between Cachuma and Gilbraltar. Do you know that
area?

What city do you live in ? If I may ask.

Yorba Linda ! Yeah , thats a long way from SY. But hey, if
you just happen to be there.....................[

When I travel , most of the time I take a rod with me, just
in case. You never know..............

Yeah, about 95 miles drive and 2 miles hike to the good
spots[cool] from my house. (1000 oaks).

Yes sure there are places right of the road BUT that
is also easy for everyone alse. So for the most part
there are no fish and you will find bunch of trash. Then
on weekend its real bad, many "families" go there
to trash the place, bbq, scream in spanish and stuff
like that. The good news is they wont go more then
50 feet from ther car .
Most of the time they "set up" right there in the parking
lot.
My right knee is also not the best but I just take it easy
and slow.
Im sure that as the weather gets colder there will be
less people and they put trout in that river.

Peter.. ya gots to realize the first fish DR caught on a fly was moby dick when he was a little bitty thing.. barely the size of a shad.. [laugh]

My first time FF was on lake Crowley with guide. Not
cheap but it was wort every penny. Cought about 10
nice trout 10'' to 14''. Then we moved to new spot
and I caught a nice 20'' bow (I have a picture someplace).
I was hooked on FF for ever[
