Planning to boat fish Lewiston confluence area for steelies this fall. Looking for tips on a couple of week long trips. I'm in Boise and would be pulling my 17ft Alumacraft probably up Hwy 95? (is there a better route?) Launch, parking, camping/hotels, fishing areas, trolling tips, etc.
My neighbor has given me much information on gear but he floats higher up in the Clearwater. He seems to think the confluence would be best for my boat and gear.
I have a couple of 8 1/2' Lamiglas rods with Shimano Corvalus reels. 12lb braided on them now. I also have two 8 1/2' vintage Fenwick spinning rods with Dam Quick 330 reels. He suggested I try trolling plugs w/shrimp plus throwing big spinners?
Please post replies or PM me if you prefer. Thanks!

Hi Burt,
One of the most popular ways of fishing the confluence is to fish it at night with lighted terminal gear. I have gone out there at night--on the bank--and it is quite a sight. I don't know much more about it, having never tried it, but Black Sheep in Lewiston could tell you everything you need to know, I'm sure. Wish you had been on LP this morning--it was great fishing. Thanks, Mike. What's doing at LP? Are they pink yet?

Like was said, use lighted gear at night. I've trolled that area using crankbaits that flash a red LED. And when they hit, the hit hard! I've seen people troll it during the day, but the night time is really when it gets busy. One option if you are going up there when it's warmer (september sometime) try as mentioned from dusk on, but during the day go upstream on the snake and jig for smallies. There are a tone of them in there and it is a lot faster action during the day than the steelies.

Good Luck!

Thanks, Belasko. Good information. Night trolling sounds like the ticket. I'll have to check out the LED cranks.

Take a look at FindFish.com for some good information on this area.
Trolling lighted plugs at night as well as fishing floats and coon shrimp along the bridge pillars are the hot ticket at night. During the day the area around the confluence of the snake is a float and shirmp mecca with a few trollers mixed in here and there but most people are achored up doing the float and shrimp gig. The most successful pond fishermen up there that I've seen use their fish finders a lot to set up on suspended fish with floats and were constantly moving around with an electric until they got bit.

How's the fishing been lately? I think i may drive down there this weekend and give it a shot. haven't fished there for steelhead only springers so it will be something new. looks like good numbers of fish are coming over lower granite.

Went out saturday and we were able to get 4 steelhead and 2 salmon by noon fishing shrimp. Went out today hoping for the same results and got skunked! Lots of fish in the river just have to be there when they feel like biting i guess.

There will be construction delays at the top of Whitebird Hill on HW 95 all fall. I think ITD has hours posted on their website when the delays will occur. You might want to time your travel so not to get stuck for an hour. It's about four hours to the top of WB hill from Boise.
