Howdy - I'm new to the whole crawdad fishin' thing and was wondering if anyone could recommend any good spots close to SLC. I first tried it at Scofield reservoir and had great success (my friend who introduced me to it was showin' me the ropes). Anyway, I tried it on my own at East Canyon today and almost got skunked. I caught about 3 in a couple of hours. Are there crawdads in any of the streams around the valley, say Millcreek or the Cottonwood streams?
Another question - does murky water affect the fishing, or are crawdads more drawn to smell? East canyon was a little murky today do to all of the Labor Day boaters and I wondered if that played a part in my less-than-adequate catch. I was using two traps with raw chicken and I had the most luck (2 dads - that's right, 2) by just huckin a piece of chicken on a string, letting it sit for a minute, and then slowly pulling it in and netting any hitch hikers. Anybody else done better at East Canyon? We spent most of the day towards the Southern point of the reservoir (opposite the boat ramp). What bait do you use to catch dads? I've heard of cat food, dog food, bacon, lettuce, corn on the cob, beef liver, cheeze-wiz, and various fish parts being used. What's your go-to bait?
Thanks for any advice.
