At the end of the month I will probably be in the Twin Falls area for a few days. Does anyone have any suggestions about places for Crappie, Perch, Bass, Catfish, or Trout? Or anything else with gills - like Crawfish?

will you have a boat, tube or toon? Ron

A float tube.

Ever want to go toe to toe with a 6' fish possibly weighing over 100lbs that can jump clear of the water?
Can you throw an 80z weight with a 6" mort on a 5/0 hook at least 50 yds?
Sturgeon, Whiote sturgeon to be exact. The largest freshwater fish in the lower 48 states. They swim in the Snake River near Twin Falls.

That really looks like fun. But I don't think my 5 wt fly rod will survive that too well. I wonder where we put our old surf fishing poles --- hmmmmm. [crazy]

That is what most use.
I sling a 13' ugly stick with a high speed 4/0 Senator loaded with 50 lb test.
What you could use your fly flinger for is getting bait. Right along the shore line of that exact area of the river, (easy drive to a parking lot, 50' from river) are many trout. I have caught some up to 18" on hoppers trailing a nymph.
Hagerman is about 35 miles from Twin Falls. Upstream from Hagerman and closer to Twin Falls is the 1000 Springs area. I have not fished there because I'm addicted to the sturgeon, but it is reputed to be great for trout and Small Mouth Bass.

That really does sound fun. So where is it that you are fishing for the sturgeon? I see that it is below a dam. What dam? If this is a secret and you don't want to say, that's ok too.
By the way what weight line are you using. I am not sure that they even sell a line heavy enough around here for this, but then I haven't looked yet either.

That is just down-stream from Hagerman on the Snake River. The dam is Lower Salmon Falls. It is real easy to get to and there are steps down to the river.
The point being fished in the video is across the river, which I think is a little better fishing but you need to drive down river to Bliss, cross the river then back up 7 or 8 miles of bad dirt road to get there, then hike over rocks under the dam (kinda spooky).
I fished from the parking lot side for years before I started crossing the river and caught many Sturgeon, biggest was about 7'.
The folks at Sports Warehouse in Twin falls (Are they still open) will have rods, reels and line to handle the job. I use 50 lb test mono.
There are usally people fishing at the base of the dam and they can help you with rigging and baiting. There is a learning curve, but once you get them figured it is the biggest fish you can catch in Idaho.
Sturgeon are also found in the Snake from up as far as below American Falls Res. all the way to the Columbia and out to the ocean.

I think that we will try the sturgeon fishing, but it is going have to be a different time, than this trip. I'll be on my own and if I don't have my husband there to keep me grounded I am not sure who would win me or the sturgeon. Probably the sturgeon!!! It looks like some of them weigh more than I do.
Plus I will only have a few hours a day at a time, so I am looking for several different places to go so that I can choose, depending on how much time I have.
Thank you though for the information I am sure we will be trying the sturgeon fishing next year if not this fall.
Thanks again!!!

Try Drekies lake for Bass or Trout. Ron

If you don't mind a pretty drive of about 30 minutes, head over to Hagerman and fish the Oster Lakes and/or Riley Creek near the State Fish Hatchery. Those lakes are full of fish but sometimes they can be finicky, if no luck at the first lake that is heavily used, hike in to one of the others. I've caught bass on lures there and big Rainbows on flies, have to check the bushes or water to see what's hatching.

Thanks everyone. Oster and Hagerman sound very do able. I have now located them on google earth. It looks like there are a bunch of ponds in that area. Looks interesting.
I love google earth!!
Idahoron-- I am having trouble locating Dierke. What area is it in?

Derkies lake is east of twin falls about 5 miles? at a place called shoshone falls.
This lake is planted by the F&G and it has a lot of trout and a few bass. I fished it earlier and got a lot of trout and even a yellow one.
Another option is Milner dam.
I have made this trip several times this year and I like it a lot. You see what the weather is doing first. If you have no wind or wind from the east or south east you will be fine. Wind from the west is a NO GO!
You will need help to do this. Put in at the boat launch in Burley. The take out spot will be at a bar and restruant down stream called River dock or maybe it is dry dock.
It is a BASS club boat dock behind the bar open to the public. You get in at burley and you float about 2.5 miles to the take out. You can go as slow or as fast as you want. If you stay in the main stream you will float 3 MPH or a little less. If you get off to the sides you can slow down and fish as hard as you want. You will need someone to take your car or truck to the take out place when you get there.
The fishing there is for Bass, and catfish. I like to catch carp there too. I use worms and cut bait. If you fish with worms you will catch Utah Chubs. Keep a couple and use them for cut bait for the cats. Float close to the North shore and work the reeds and trees for bass. Cats will be where you find them. Good luck Ron

Thanks, I with the directions I finally located Derkies. I was looking in all the wrong areas! I had been to Shoshone Falls, but never knew that there was a lake so close. There is another little lake next to Derkie are there fish there too?
Nice pictures - I am actually getting excited for my conference. Obviously for the fishing - not for a boring conference!!!

I think what you are looking at is the water above the dam, I think. Yes there are some fish there but I have never fished it. Ron

No, I was meaning the little lakes or maybe they are just ponds that are south east of Dierke. --- Just curious. [

]
Thanks again, it looks like a great place to try.

Those are called the hidden lakes. To my knowledge there are no fish there but I am sure that some 5 gal bucket biologist has planted something there.
I would not waste time going to them for fishing. On the weekends kids go there to high dive off the rocks. One dies about every year.
You should find good fishing at the main lake but it could be crowded. The lake has a swimming area on the south end. The rest of the lake is for fishing. Once you get your tube past the swimming area you won't have much for other people. Ron

Is there a particular area of the lake that would be a good place to start?
[signature]
The last time I fished it was a couple of months ago. We got bluegills between the boat launch and the end of the swimming area. From the end of the swimming area to the back of the lake is where we got the most trout. The Bass will also be in that area.
After you pass the swimming area there is a point on your map. The bay to the west of the point was real good for trout, and straight out from the point is DEEP water. It is 35 foot deep in the center. That is where the goldie came from.
The Regulations on bass used to be a trophy fishery. I don't see anyting any more on this. Also remember that Catfish were planted in the past there. If you catch a small bluegill cut him in half and drag him on the bottom with the least amount of weight you need to get it to the bottom. I know guys that have got big ones there but so far I have been skunked there for cats. Ron

Here is your map back with some spots marked. The pink are spots we got trout. The spots in green is where we got Bass.
I am going to bet that the cats are in the center where it is the deepest. Good luck and let me know how you did
Oh the orange circle is where the boat launch is. You will have to pay a couple of dollars to access the park. Ron
