Hi
New poster here ...
I was interested in trying my luck at snagging some tasty catfish for the first time. I don't have a boat, so I will be fishing from shore. Can anyone lend any suggestions for some of the better places that would best suit shore fishing for cats? I was thinking of Willard Bay or Pineview? I've tried the state park entrance of Utah Lake, and didn't have much luck. All suggestions and techniques are much appreciated in advance.
Thanks
Never tried snaging cat fish but have caught some where the provo goes into Utah lake using raw chicken meat on a hook.

I've fished for catfish at the American Fork boat harbor and had success more often than not. I usually fish for catfish in the evening or through the night. My general technique is to use a worm on the bottom with an egg sinker above a swivel for weight. I've heard a lot of good things about using chicken liver and I actually plan to try some tonight. I'm also going to try out a slip bobber on my second pole, which I've heard is good for keeping the mudcats off your line.
If you're planning on eating them I think Utah Lake is okay here and there, but I wouldn't make a habit of eating fish out of Utah Lake. I'd also figure they'd taste better coming out of cleaner water.

[font "Courier New"][#000050][size 3]If you get desperate, and don't mind dinky ones (under 18" and couple pounds), I've had luck at community ponds.
Bait: Catfish Charlie brand "Wild Cat Blood" premolded bait (red and white bag for about $3)
Line rig: instructions on back of bag (the typical egg slip sinker before a swivel and then 18" of line to a hook)
Time: after sunset. I've tried early morning at sunrise, but never get a bite. I guess they're more interested in settling down than a bedtime snack!
in May, I did get a few nibbles with this method at Willard, but as I've only gone for catfish twice there (and I really wasn't trying the one time... just out to enjoy nature). I suppose you could try it, though! I was just a little east of the North Marina, off the sidewalk, when I got the nibbles. I tried the north-east corner near there, but didn't get anything at all.
Lots of big carp went right past my bait...too busy spawning to bother eating. Better luck now, maybe?

I've had great luck at American Fork Boat Harbour. I use a bobber and about 4-5' of leader. I can fish a bigger area and keep myself occupied.
Here's some I caught a few weeks ago. 6 lb and 8lb's.
Good luck to ya........

I've caught kitties at Lincoln Beach but all small mud cats. I love to fish Salem Pond if that's not too far for you. I always snag a few down there. All nice clean channel cats. Some smaller ones as they're planters but my average is 5 or 6 pounds. Not too shabby.

Apparently you can't get it directly from the forum anymore, but the Google view is decent enough.

Next week, I think I'll scour the forum for more of TubeDude's articles... they're really good!
