My spinning rod recommends a 6-14 lb. test. Is it okay to use a 4 lb. test line, or will that affect the performance of the rod/reel? You guys have given me great advice so far on other questions and I sincerely appreciate it. By the way Tubedude, thanks for the advice on Rock Cliff at Jordanelle. Caught about what seemed like 100 yellow perch by the stick-ups which was fun for the kids. Trout and SMB weren't biting unfortunately, but we had a great time anyway.

you can always go lighter than what your rod is rated for. The main damage is caused by guys using braid or heavy line on rods that arent built for it.

Good luck fishing!!

Shouldn't change any action but just remember to use smaller baits and to take care not to break off any fish due to the heavier rod vs light line.

Line depends on a lot of applications. What type of fish are you fishing for? River, lake? Clear water, murky water, don't know yet? Depth? Lots of possible snags? Structure type, etc.
On the other hand, 4 lb. test should be fine as long as the drag is set close to being right. One of my favorite rods is a 12-17 lb test line rod but I've never used more than 10 lb on it.

My recommendation: go with the 6 or 8 lb P-Line. It's really low vis, so in my opinion, it's going to be no more visible (spooky) than any 4 lb test you put on there. That way you are running within your rod specs, and you'll be better prepared in case you get lucky and hook into that big one.

Cost is a little higher for the P-Line but it's not astronomical. If I remember correctly, it's right around the mid-range for the fluorocarbons.
