after reading all the waynes words reports that nothing was happening up north and the stripers were boiling at warm creek my uncle and I decided to head out of wahweep and fish and camp in warm springs. Well the reports could not have been more wrong. We did find stripers in warm creek and there were thousands of them, but they were perch sized about 6 inches. after 2 days of trying to find boils in that area and not even being able to drum up small mouth we spent a day in earnest searching for boils and stripers and finally found a few around bouy #3 by antelope. The boils were really fast and only lasted a manner of about 20-30 seconds and then they were gone, but we did manage to pull in 5 stripers from boils in 2 days of fishing them. We tried fishing under lights and managed another 7 under the lights. I think the heat wave this week drove them back to the depths. We did find out after 3 of the 4 days we were there that suddenly they had shown up again at Hite, but it was way to late to make a move up there. Other than the catching though it was a great trip and fun to get out there at least and I was just glad my 75 year old uncle was able to enjoy it even though I felt like a failure as a guide,

p.s. most of the stripers we did get were pretty good sized around 22-24 inches and around 4-6 lbs.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#500000]My wife and I usually fish Powell at least twice a year, but we didn't go down this year at all. I've had those times when you could fish your butt off and not get into a lot of big ones. I guess we get spoiled easily on those trips where you catch coolers full in a few hours. 35 years ago I lived in Northern California and spent most of my time fishing for stripers when they were running up the Sacramento River, spring and fall. Catching just one striper over 5 pounds on a given day was reason to celebrate, and the limit was 3, then later only 2. Powell would be a long way to drive to catch 2 stripers each. [unimpressed] But I'm missing Powell and probably will go down at the end of February or first days of March if some are being caught. That's a great time to go to Wahweap - - no crowds, perfect fishing weather if it doesn't blow, and a lake that's not frozen. I wish they'd gather at the dam buoys again, that was way fun!
