Me and another Alabama boy, Joey, hit Bug Bay at 5:00 Friday. Trolled out of the north marina, making our way to the NE corner, planning to work the north dike as the boils popped up (hopefully).
Dang were we lucky last night![sly]
About a half hour of trolling I get a WHOMP on the planer and it's FISH ON! A good wiper and I fight for a minute and then my 2 month old 17 lb test Spiderwire FRIGGIN BREAKS! Not at the knot, either. Grrr. I know I lost a good fish and my best producing lure so I'm a little bummed. I turn the boat around to fetch the planer and...[#ff0000]Edited[/#ff0000]?...the planer is moving! The fish is still attached to the back planer release! I carefully scoop up the planer and grab the line. I start a hand-over-hand retrieve and pull up a 22" beauty! And I get my best lure back!

We get lines out again and troll about 30 more minutes and...Deja Vu!...I get another wham and the Spiderwire breaks again! Same lure, same planer. I'll be struck dead if the same scenario didn't play out again...retrieve planer and pull wiper up by hand!
Joey's starting wonder if he's entered some kind of alternate universe by now.
So now, it's getting to be boil time so I float us over to some s'merged willows that tend to give cover to wiper food. We cast for a few minutes and all at once, about 50 yards away, wipers start boiling! I gun the electric and we coast within casting distance and almost immediately Joey misses a couple of strikes and then nails a big wiper! He's using a baitcaster and his drag is singing! Finally gets it close and I net it and It makes Joey's day.[inline "joeyb BOIL 022.jpg"]

We actually doubled up at that time but Joey's wiper is a full 24" and I only take the time to take a pic of him and my wiper gets put back quickly so we can get our lures back in the water.

We chase a few more small boils and I end up boating 1 more before the boils end and we decide to leave before we have to put the lights out.

All wipers went back in the water last night, too.[angelic]

Good times![Image: happy.gif]

Man! that is a toad of a wiper! Good job boys, maybe soon here we can all get into some boils that last more than a couple seconds, my fingers are crossed!

I only use the planers with braid and I loop the braid around the releases so the planer stays on the line until it gets to the boat where I can unclip it. I do this so I don't have to turn the boat around to retrieve the planer. Mono usually releases, requiring a U-turn. This is the first time I have ever had braid break when doing this. Needless to say, I ripped the spiderwire off the reel and replaced it with Fireline Crystal, which has never broken on me.

And yes, I was very lucky![Image: happy.gif]

That's two pretty cool endings to what could have been a bummer. I use 20 lb FireLine on my planer rigs and 14 lb Vanish leader to the lure. What lb test Spiderline was you using?

On another note, you clean up reall well since your [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=410783;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=unread#unread"]avatar[/url] picture. Cutting your hair, loosing some weight, and putting on a shirt does you good.[:p]

Come on Jim, you should know better than to retie broken spider wire onto your reel[Wink], just kidding you. That is very strange to have spider wire break like that, I have never heard of that happening. Those are some nice wipers especially that 24 incher, I bet your friend was very surprised by how hard it fought. You got to love that screaming reel sound, best sound in the world when your wiper fishing. Thanks for sharing your report and pictures.

17 lb test. I'm swearing off Spiderwire. I'm using 8 lb fireline crystal with no mono leader at the present on 2 of my rods. 8 lb Yozuri Hybrid on the 3rd rod and 10 lb Stren on the last. I got the situations covered.[cool]

BTW...That Yozuri Hybrid is on it's THIRD YEAR of hard abuse and is every bit as strong as it was the first year. I have had no break-offs at all and I believe I'll change all of my reels over to that brand after I use up all the remaining line in inventory. It's truly amazing stuff.
