I live 1/2 block from a lake 7 miles across. People in my neighborhood discard those rod & reel setups frequently in the trash. I take 'em home & give them to kids who I hope will use them. I include a bobber, some plastic worms and sometimes, even a decent lure.

St. Peter started with a Zebco, Walt Disney/ Hughie, Dooey and Louie rod & reel.[Image: happy.gif]

I'll buy my nephew a fishing rod as a gift. I want him to learn how to catch a fish. I'll teach him. This will excite him more.
They don't carry this item all the time! They rotate items for sale. Every day they have some thing different forsale. But woot also carriers items for adults. It doesn't matter what you buy shipping cost will always be $5.00 and not higher! If you check out Ebay you'll find combo's for children also.
It's great that your going to teach a child how to fish. Just try to remember practice measure, weigh, photograph and release. Unless your going to eat the fish you catch!

if i were going to get a rod/reel for a young kid i would get something that might last a little longer, i just looks like these rods aren't that durable, little kids can do a number on things

[#005000]Well I used something similar when I was a kid, and that was a Zebco 202 with a fiberglass rod and it had a 10# test. I think with the guidance of a adult they could learn how and then upgrade to better rod & reel. When I bought my Zebco I had to get Green Stamps so many books and then had to pay tax on it then, I went to the nearest water hole![/#005000]

i meant this more so that it will last and wont break so that they will still have it when they are older for memories, i had a zebco as my first and it still works, but i'm not sure how knowing i was using it

Green Stamps... now there is something I havent heard in some time... Back in the sixties...

I had one of those zebco 202's with the fiberglass rod..

I wished I still had it today... and I would have if I hadnt lost it chasing after a 20 pound bass.[:p]

I got tired of breaking my line so I put on a 70 pound test mono and the last time I ever hooked in to that bass he went right for the under water tree branches, I must have yerked my spoon out of his mouth and snagged the branches because I gave a big heave ho and then OH NO@!!!!!

I dont think they will ever improve on that white fiberglass rod and reel combo, they have only been made cheeper ever since.

I have a lot of respect for the 202, I battled many a 20 pound carp and landed most every one,
