I've read much about guys (and gals) having success with jigs at Strawberry. I am wondering if you would mind sharing a little info with someone who has little experience w/ jigs.
BTW - I usually fish the Berry from a float tube.
What colors and shapes are best?
What, if anything, do you like to tip the jig with?
What is the best technique for fishing with a jig (cast/retreive or bouncing off bottom)?
Any tips (excuse the pun) are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
[#ff0000] I'm not as experienced as some, but I will share what I know.[/#ff0000]
What colors and shapes are best? [#ff0000]I prefer the 3" tubes and white is pretty fail-safe. I've also had success on green, pink and pumpkin varieties.[/#ff0000]
What, if anything, do you like to tip the jig with? [#ff0000]I like to smear some smelly jelly on the tail of the jig. Call me crazy but I'm partial to banana (makes your hands smell good). Then I'll tip with just about anything (red-side shiner, chub, crawler).[/#ff0000]
What is the best technique for fishing with a jig (cast/retreive or bouncing off bottom)? [#ff0000]Both. My personal preference is to cast toward shore and retrieve early, and go deeper and jig vertically later in the morning and into the afternoon.[/#ff0000]
Any tips (excuse the pun) are greatly appreciated. [#ff0000]If you have sonar and are able to locate fish, your success will increase dramatically. Good luck.[/#ff0000]
Thanks!
What colors and shapes are best?[#0000ff] I prefer pearl and black and all colors in between. Glow tubes will also work. Not sure what you mean by "shapes" but I typically use 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" long.[/#0000ff]
What, if anything, do you like to tip the jig with?[#0000ff] Chub, red shiner, minnow, meal worms and PowerBait (use occasionally but you usually only get one chance to hook the fish)[/#0000ff]
What is the best technique for fishing with a jig (cast/retreive or bouncing off bottom)? [#0000ff]Catch the majority vertically but I will also cast and bounce back to the boat. I often will drop one vertically and cast and bounce the other rod. Also putting one rod on the bottom which I actively jig and leave the other rod in the holder about 5 to 10' off of the bottom and I will occasionally jig it, but mostly leave it in the rod holder and watch the fish finder. Often while reeling up a fish from the bottom another fish will hit the suspended jig. [/#0000ff]

Any tips (excuse the pun) are greatly appreciated. [#0000bf]Every few minutes bounce the jig off of the bottom a few times and then hold it just off of the bottom for awhile.[/#0000bf]
Thanks!
[/#000000]

A few years back I started trying to catch a Kokanee up there at this time of year from a tube. One of the jigs recomended was a bright orange/pink color. Still haven't caught a kok but the cutts and rainbows shallow in the morning have loved it tipped with a little bit of a worm.
