Has anyone here done much fishing at Sunset Park? I was reading that at least one fish habitat structure was placed in the pond and some big fish have been pulled out of it a few years ago. My wife and I went for a couple hours. We could see the bluegill but they weren't interested in meal worms. They attacked the little 1/12 oz gold kastmaster though and we each caught one on it.

I fished there a couple years ago during the trout season (Nov- April). Fishing was great. Never fished there during this time of year though. I heard that some guy caught a 4 foot Alligator out of there at the beginning of the summer..

I managed to hook a pretty hefty carp this evening. I was using a light spinning outfit with 6lbs test fluorocarbon. He looked to be at least 6 lbs, maybe 8. I couldn't tell if I'd snagged him or if he actually hit my 1/8 ounce chrome kastmaster. Got him up to the wall and then my wife went a little nutty on me with her excitement and grabbed the line. She thought it was a rope I guess. I tried to get her to let go and use her bucket since we didn't have a net but before she let go the line snapped.

I was fishing in that same corner of the pond. I don't think this carp was that big but my wife is certain it was at least as long as her thigh. Maybe 10 or 12 lbs. It looked to me to be around the average size of the carp in the BassPro shop tank. Right now its just a fish story unless I manage to hook it again and land it. I'm still surprised I hooked it on a kastmaster though.

I was with my buddy redneck yesterday, and that bad girl (full of eggs!) was closer to 9lbs 3ozs. He'd just cast out, set the rod in his holder, and hadn't even set the drag when she hit! It flipped the bail, and the fight was on! Redneck thought he'd snagged on something, so imagine our surprise when he got it up to the wall. To quote Redneck, "Oh, s***t, get the net!" It wouldn't fit in the basket, so he had to put it on a line. We saw another cat today, but it was only about 1lbs 5ozs. Did see a really pretty koi, though.

I wonder if catfish offspring ever make it to adulthood in the urban ponds.

Either way nice catch and post.

Thanks. I sent that picture into NDOW, and they told Redneck to send in the trophy fish form, since his catch is the largest one reported for Sunset Park pond.
Yesterdays highlights:
Seeing that koi
Seeing a large mouth bass herding a school of rainbow trout (about five feet off the wall on the southern bank)
Redneck getting a great rainbow, but a GD cumerang got it, snapping his line. It should be fun when that smegging bird craps a #16 treble hook! It's the same kind of hook that Redneck lipped Lady Cat with. [fishin]
On the new licenses we'll both probably get trout stamp, two rod, and Colorado River endorsements. We'll probably hit Lake Mead (no boat) a couple of times this year, but it's only $3 for the endorsement, but why not, just in case.

Makes me wonder if I should take a small shallow running trout colored crank bait out to Sunset.

They don't usually come in shallow enough to see the school, but the cumerangs have been really pushing them in close lately. Various baits work, but we've really been having luck with Powerbait. For the most part, keep your casts in the short to medium range, and you'll be ok.

I hate the cumerangs. The last time i went fishing at flsp the cumerangs caught all the fish and i did not even get a bite.
