I'm asking for some advice. My husband is retiring after 22 years in the military. He always talks about someday taking a fishing trip to Alaska with his dad (neither have ever been there - both are avid fishermen). However, he retires in October - not a good time to go up there. I want to surprise him with a fishing trip somewhere. Can you recommend some amazing fishing spots for the Nov-Jan time frame - or should I plan something for him in the spring in AK? Details such as particular towns, cabins, guides are welcome. Thank you for your help.

Idaho steelhead should be going full bore by then. There are guides available and plenty of lodging to be had.

Thats a fantastic gift. If it was me I'd wait the six months to go to Alaska. That would be a trip of a life time. It would also give you more time to plan.

If they are avid anglers, put them in the saltwater. This time of year is perfect along the SE coast. Lots of activity going on right now. Florida is probably the best place to start. Mosquito Lagoon has some of the best inshore/ nearshore fishing in the US. Dozens of species and seasoned guides. Start by Googling Mosquito Lagoon, Florida and you'll get all the info you need.

If these guys are into fishing, that's what i'd do.

If your pocket book has no boundries, consider Los Cabos, Mexico. There isn't anything finer, and if I were to purchase a trip somewhere, that would be it.

I'm a Veteran and appreciate all my fellow veterans. I hope the trip works out for them. If you run into problems, just let me know. I know every charter captain along my home coast of South Carolina. You can contact me, and i'll set them up with free trips here in Murrells Inlet. You just pay for the hotel. That's a no joke offer.

Hey Lauren,
If you send husband (what a lucky he is to have you for a wife) to Alaska I have three words of advice:
research
research
research
I have read too many stories of the "trip of a lifetime" to Alaska turning into a nightmare from overbooking and overfishing There are some great opportunities there, but there is also alot of folks going when the time is prime.

Good luck and I would consider Idaho or even the saltwater...big fishies!

Thank you for all of your replies and advice. I do know that he is a freshwater fisherman and actually did recently mention Idaho - I will start researching that state. Of course money is a consideration, but this is a big thank you and I want him to have a great time with his dad. My nonparticipation in his fishing hobby is one of the reasons for our long marriage! If he only wished for a tour of Europe instead.....
