A couple of weeks ago I was supposed to take my scout group to Yellowstone for a drive and to listen to the elk bugle. For one reason or another most of them ended up dropping out so I decided to take the two who I had left fishing instead.[cool]
To make a long story short we caught lots of nice cutts a few decent bows. I caught them on dry flies mostly cricket patterns and royal wolfs. We also caught them on spinners, rapalas, worms, and just about everything else the boys had in the box.
The highlight of the afternoon was when the boys improvised and cooked up a couple of rainbows over an open fire for lunch. I thought it was a bad idea, but they did a great job and the fish were very tasty.
Here are a few pics.

Where at on the Teton is that? I fish all of that river and don't really recognize that place...

Well then you don't really fish all of the river...J/k[laugh]
This section is deep in the canyon stretch. The canyon is usually considered from the Hog-hollow bridge in Newdale to around Felt and Tetonia. This is my favorite stretch for the beauty of the scenery, but it is incredibly difficult to get into.

How do you get into it? Start from where?
I haven't been there, but it is on my "to do someday" list.
Thanks!

You can put in a pontoon boat at the old dam site and float to the hog hollow bridge. There are multiple access points from Newdale up to felt all of them are either on private property or require an extremely steep hike into the the canyon on a crappy trail. On this particular hike we accessed the river at the Felt power plant. This involves a half mile hike straight down on the gated power company road and then we went cross river and cross country to several holes along the river.
This is really beautiful country, but I am not exaggerating when I say it can kill you if you aren't careful. Getting from place to place is tricky, rugged, and steep.
If you fish this section just be extremely careful and make sure to release all the cutthroats.

I see what you mean. I almost got a heart attack just looking at the canyon on Google Earth! [unimpressed]
Sure do wish I was 20 again. It made my feet itch to go just thinking about all that lonely water!

Great pics and story I bet its a trip they will always remember [cool]

Oh, I know exactly where that is. I've actually been there a few times. I've been with fight4not once or twice and with a couple other buddies. You are right about the hike down and back up from the canyon. It can definitely give you a heart attack if you aren't in somewhat good shape. We have caught some BIG fish down there in that stretch if you know where to go..

Hey windriver I am new to this site and am impressed with the people here. It doesn't seem to be to much of a good old boys club like some sites. Keep up the good work.
I have wanted to float the teton in the canyon for a while but since I've heard it can be technical I haven't. I know the upper stretch is not floatable but was wondering how high you can start from. I have a watermaster which I can pack down the canyon no problem It's just the rapids I am concerned about. Have you floated it? How far up have you started from? Can you portage the spots you might have trouble with? Any info would be apriciated.
Thanks A Lot

I've floated that section down to the old boat ramp. There are some good sized rapids down there. Probably about four or five good runs. We had a little three man raft and lots of gear, so we decided to walk around them. It was a lot of fun but a bunch of work, and as mentioned, potentially dangerous.

If you can get permission to enter the canyon around Canyon creek (green canyon area) That is about as high as I would go. I have floated the old dam down to hog hollow many times and it can be pretty fun or scary depending on how you look at it in a pontoon boat. I have never been in any serious trouble in that stretch, but there is a potential for problems.
There is no way in heck I would float the upper canyon stretch from Felt down to Canyon Creek.[pirate]

We put in where Bitch Creek enters the Teton. It certainly was an adventure!

Thanks for the info guys. were the tuff spots fairly easy to portage? What time of year did you go? It really does sound like an adventure. Did you put in at bitch creek or did you put in at the confluece? I really would like to float it next summer when the water level is right. Maybe if your around you can go. Thanks again for the info.
