I was wondering do trout bite at night?

I talked to a guy that fishes for trout in utah on moonlite lakes with a fly and bubble and he says he catches alottt. This was one of the ponds that you see lots of activity.

So they do bite at night. Guess I'm gonna fish Willow beach at night for trout next time out

I dont know about catching rainbows after dark- I've only tried one time, and I failed.
I do know that brown trout are nocturnal, and night fishing for them is very popular.

If you are going to the river on a night trip, I would suggest tossing big swimbaits and AC Plugs for those big stripers down there.

These guys are out there-

Dont fish for trout at night - USE 'EM FOR BAIT! [Wink]

I've caught bows after dark. They will take flies then. Also if it is a full moon they will feed after dark and you can have some great action.

Sometimes when I go to willow beach I'll head out early in the morning befor the sun comes up, to try and catch some trout in the dark. All my night time fishing at willow beach is done between 3am and 6am waiting for the sun to come up. I have probibly tried for a total of 6 hours and only threw power bait and salmon eggs. They do bite, but it is very very light, and you will most likely have to time your hook sets well. I still have not caught one at night though.

Yah I would say you can catch them but the bite is very light and kinda slow, and you will for sure have to set the hook with nice timing.

I do try and fish for the stripers at willow but never seen anyone fishing for trout at night. I would like to fish for trout while I'm fishing for stripers when there at night you know gives me something to keep me busy until the stripers hit

Wow nice trout !!
[signature]
What do you use to go after the big trouts?
[signature]
In Dave's pictures those are steelhead. We don't get those in Southern Nevada. There are some big ones lurking in Lake Tahoe and they pretty much use similar tactics as they use for mackinaw. Troll a medium or large sized minnow type plug. Now according to a guy I talked to a Basspro guy I talked to in the fly shop, he caught a 7 lbs rainbow at Willow Beach using a #10 olive wooly bugger. I've also read in the NDOW angler info guide for Sunset that a 12lbs trout was hauled out in 2002. I don't know what was used. I haven't seen anything that big come out of either place yet.

Trout can survive the summer in Sunset park? I thought the waters were to hot here and they all die and get eated by the turtles. Or is that only floyd lamb?
[signature]
Its surprising but I guess a few do. It was actually 2003 and it weighed 12 pounds 10 ounces. A lot of pretty hefty fish have come out of Sunset according to. NDOW's angler information guide.

Some trout can definitely survive the summers there, but it is more likely that the 12 lber from sunset was a fresh stocker fish.

The hatcheries keep big, healthy fish to use for the breeding programs, and at a certain age these fish start reaching a point where they are no longer the best breeders. Instead of letting those fish die at the hatchery, they will stock them with the other trout they release (same goes for catfish), and give a lucky (or skilled) angler a chance at catching a lunker.

You guys wanna catch some monster trout, head to California.

Irvine Lake Sees New Lake Record 22.6 Pound Rainbow Trout
Caught on Berkley PowerBait Turbo Dough and 4-pound test Berkley Trilene 100-Percent Fluorocarbon

Greg Stotesbury and His 22.6 Lb Rainbow Trout
Irvine Lake, CA -(FishNLand.com)- World-class saltwater angler Greg Stotesbury of Mission Viejo added another accolade to his already impressive array of fishing awards: New Lake Record Holder for rainbow trout at Irvine Lake with a monstrous 22.6 pounder caught on March 19. The Orange County-based angler just wanted to take a day off amidst the grueling sportsmen’s show season, so he headed down to Irvine Lake for only the second time in the last 10 years.
“My saltwater fishing club, Los Pescadores of Newport Beach, was having a trout tournament at Irvine Lake”, related Stotesbury. “My wife and I anchored up in 19 feet of water off Trout Island. I saw a guy fishing nearby get a fish on something green, so that’s what I put on. Once the bait settled to the bottom, I got bit instantly, and the fish greyhounded over the surface.”
“The big fish hit on Berkley PowerBait Turbo Dough in the spring green/yellow color, rigged on a #14 gold treble hook. I was using 4-pound test Berkley Trilene 100-Percent Fluorocarbon line, I owe it all to Berkley!” “We fought him for about 5 minutes, and my wife Dara did an expert job on netting it. We had brought a very large net in anticipation of catching a big one. I’ve caught trout in the 8 to 9 pound class before at Lee’s Ferry. This fish was very powerful, and would bust you off in a heartbeat if your drag wasn’t set properly.”
Irvine Lake’s General Manager Dave Noyes added, “We’ve been dealing with our fish supplier, Tim Goodman at Calaveras Trout Farms, for about 5 years now. When we got started, he promised that within 5 years we would have a new lake record fish. The former record was 22.55 pounds, and now we’ve broken it. Almost all of the big fish at Irvine Lake are caught on Berkley Gulp! or Berkley Power Bait.”

One of those that didn't get away is the pictured 14-pound, 12-ounce rainbow trout, landed by Daniel Han of Riverside, which hit a trolled Rapala at mid-lake.

Most of the fish on stringers are rainbows in the 1- to 5-pound range, with some
6- to 10-pounders being seen daily. There were also some brook and brown trout caught, but no reported catches of bass or catfish.
Irvine Lake is a privately run, paid-entry lake, so no fishing license is required.

Irvine Lake Fish Report 03-13-2008
Location: Irvine Lake
by Steve Carson

A huge 14-4 Florida-strain largemouth bass nearly set a new lake record at Irvine Lake, and is the heaviest bass weighed at the lake in nearly a decade. Irvine Lake Pro Shop employee Nick Sepulveda nailed the monster Bucketmouth himself on Sunday.

"I got bites on 2 consecutive casts", reported Sepulveda. "In 30 feet of water near the dam, I was dropshotting with a pumpkin-color 4-inch Berkley Power Worm. The first fish was a 5.5 pounder, and the second was the 14-4. The worm was rigged with a Gamakatsu hook and just 6-pound test Berkley line. [**Ed. note- the IGFA world record for largemouth bass in the 6-pound line category is 16-9].

Trout anglers were not to be outdone on the big fish scene this week, and a whopping 5-trout limit totaling 42.8 pounds by Carlos Ortiz of Buena Park include fish weighing 12.6, 9.4, 8.1, 6.6 and 6.12 pounds. Most fish filling the stringers were ranging from 2 to 7 pounds, with lots of 7 to 9 pounders adding spice.
