So I get a Call from my uncle Thursday morning asking me if I wanted to go fly fishing Saturday 10/17. ..I of course said yes and asked where he wanted to go to. Well he hasn't been reading up on reports lately and was pretty unaware how Comins lake has been doing this year. He insisted we hit it up because he did really well with pike there last year. I continued to tell him how dead that lake has been. He insisted and I just want to fish so I could care less where we went. We left at 4:30 am Saturday morning. Right as we hopped onto the I-15 Northbound we instantly saw sirens and Cop lights up ahead. We knew something was up.. As we get closer cars rolled slower to a standstill, we realized up ahead a Pig Slop truck had turned over and slopped the freeway! Needless to say we didnt get out of vegas til 7:30am =(.
Well we get out to Ely around 10:45am or so. My Uncle looks at me and tells me to call my wife.. "Were staying the weekend" haha. Well saturday we fished Comins lake, some secret river he likes, and Cave lake. Fishing was just as I told him at Comins.. dead dead dead. Saw a couple of 22+ inch pike filleted up in the water but thats about it. Then we went to his "secret spot" and no wonder its a damn secret! You have to crawl through a damn hole in the brush thats only 2 and a half feet tall to get there! He did well there but I didnt have any luck... We then continued our Journey to Cave Lake. This place was beautiful. Tall trees, crystal clear water... After reading the fishing report, and talking to some local anglers we were not expecting much success there... All it took us was about 20 min to find a pattern that worked for these fish.. We slaughtered em! Probably 40+ decent fish in 2 hours. Lots of Bows, a few browns. Some of locals who had just arrived looked at me like I was crazy when I told em how many we had been catching. I caught 4 more as they were just setting up there poles.. then I didnt look so crazy hehe. Well we decided after Cave lake to get some sleep then head to Illipah in the morning.
Arrived at Illipah around 7 am and the wind was blowing like mad. Got out of the truck and my uncle was in shock at how low the water was. It was so low, it was 2 seperate lakes now. A sand bar in the middle was now exposed seperating the 2. Well I started fishing the southern most lake with some dries but I did not have the midge pattern that was hatching. I walked to my uncle who was working the other lake to ask him how he was doing and he was unhooking a fish =( . He said he was like 6 fish in already lol. Saw he was using a wooly bugger. Threw one on and 3 casts in bam! fish on!.. Fishing continued like that for a few hours. Probably another 50 fish day between the both of us. We even decided to bring some bigger ones home. There are some really really decent sized Bows in Illipah. We Landed 4 rainbows over 16 inches and really really fat. Also lost one that felt like he could have been pushing 4 or 5 lbs. Fought him for at least 8 minutes before he spit the hook for a LDR (long distance release) I would get him close, he would see me, and run his ass off again..Only took pictures with me phone of a few fish at Cave lake and the ones I kept at Illipah. The rest I would unhook while they were in the water still. Fun times. Ended up getting home Sunday around 5pm.
