i had a few hours to kill this afternoon so i fished a few lower reaches of the weeb near the canyon....
caught in the neighborhood of 15 trout in 3 hours all fish came on plastics today, NONE on raps or anything else... most fish were small with bows browns and cutts in the mix...
the hot color today was a rainbow trout type color on a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig head fished super super slow and low...
here is a pic of my largest fish of the day!! she was a tank for sure in the 22-23 inch range... i love these beautifull fish!!!

i've been a lurker of this site for a little while now, and although catman seems to catch a lot of big fish, i bet he's killed a lot of big trout unintentionally. you can't handle trout like a catfish, don't let your hands be vice-grips. don't grab the fish by the gill or jaw. don't use treble hooks, and clip the barbs off the hooks you use. just because it swam away does not mean it survived. ideally you should be able to release the trout without removing it from the water too much or manhandling it. these aren't catfish or bass, the mortality rate for trout is much higher after being caught than many warm-water species. i'm not trying to be a huge jerk, it just kills me a little bit to see all these nice browns being handled like that with every post catman makes. you're obviously a good fisherman and you seem to have good intentions, just keep these things in mind...

Dude, chill. That trout has a tiny little bit of blood coming from the corner of it's mouth, no big deal. It's probably from the hook itself. It's not gonna die and it's okay even if it went into catman's cajun recipe which I don't think it did. But yeah sometimes people worry too much, just relax and lets enjoy fishing without undue worry. Of course it's gonna hurt the fish, a hook is gonna be sunk into its mouth every time. If I ever get to the point of wanting to use barbless hooks because it might hurt them, I'll just quit fishing entirely. If one is worried about hurting them, they might go fish watching instead of fishing.

I'm sure the fish is doing fine, some guys just like to get worked up over small things. Nice brown Catman, i love seeing your pics of nice browns.[cool]

the point is not to treat every fish like a pet. if he/you want to keep a fish, fine, use a treble hook, 15 barbs, and a club for all i care. but if you're at all interested in protecting the resource, and catching and releasing with the actual intent of having the fish survive, then maybe you should pay attention to those rules. judging by the comments that catman has made, he seems to respect the fish, and maybe he would be interested in undertaking several small inconveniences to improve the fish's odds of survival.

I guess I'll comment for what it's worth. I agree with the intent of [url "../../../cgi-bin/community/community.cgi?do=user_page;pg=user_profile_view.html;username=arctic_grayling"]arctic_grayling[/url]'s post.[cool] I'm not going to comment on Utcatman's holding and hook methods. Lord knows, Ive done my share of not to smart handling of the big trout.
Common you guys, he's basically right in the info. in his post as to proper handling. I'm sure Utcatman can judge whether his suggestings have merit, wich in my opinion, they did. I emphasise suggestions! [
] For me, Ive been landing the big un's on their side and taking pics. with them laying accordingly unless I plan to keep one for dinner which I admitt I've done. Still have to learn that smaller guys taste just as good and leave the big uns. but I am working on it hard!!!! [blush] I still get hung up with "I'm going to keep this guy" but I'm a lot better at releasing now. I'm still having trouble with the ego, predator drive but I really realize that it's wrong for a lot or good reasons so this older than dirt guy can still learn and wise up!!!! [

Nice Fish! I do have a question for ya, you can anwser in a PM if you want... I was wondering do you let your jigs drift as your working it, or do you throw enough lead on to keep them on the bottom and more or less stationary. I have been catchin a ton, letting them drift while bouncing them along, but haven't caught any real toads. So, I was thinking I might need to add weight to slow down the retreive. Also, do you ever drop shot on the weeb, how's it worked for ya? I do well in slower stretches with it, but too much in the faster stuff.

i'm sorry, i probably shouldn't have called someone out. my point is simply that there's no point in practicing catch and release if you're likely releasing a dead fish. i try to take every precaution to release fish unharmed when i'm catching and releasing, and i know i still kill a few here and there. i meant to educate, not deride and i'm sorry if i came off that way.

Good on ya. That's exactly how I took it!!! [
] Don't know why others took it any different.??? Folks seem to be gettun a little to sensitive or combative of late. Maybe we're both out of touch? [:/]

no of course not!!! i only catch and release... and this fish i assure you is fine.. i caught her with a 1/16 oz short shank jig head.. that hook was right in the corner of the mouth... she was just a bleeder sometimes they do that.
and as for the guy going on being a critic... i really could care less what you think you know by looking at a picture. this fish was fine... i have taken plenty of critisism on this site from a very select few people and it really doesnt bother me...
on another note welcome to the site!! lol im not sure that was the best way to start your posting but welcome!!! if you ever wanna hit the river let me know... id be happy to show you i am very gentle with my fish.
