Sunday morning my sweet wife, Coco, pan fried our last sauger filets. They were sooo good that this morning I thought I’d better go looking for some early sauger. Well the fog was thick and the water a little too warm yet, 62 degrees. I spent all morning trolling, jigging and using a three-way rig, but no sauger. So, after lunch I tried trolling my favorite river ledge—no takers. But the creeks are full of shad and all kinds of fish. So I went there. I trolled two 1/4 oz. Deep-Wee-R’s in the creeks along the ledges (15 to 17 feet deep) for several hours this afternoon. I caught fish. Not much to brag about, but lots of fun and a beautiful day for both Jake (my dog) and me. I caught several largemouth (14 and 16 inches), a half dozen very chunky white bass (the creek was full of them), two blue cats and a nice flathead (all eating sized), a three pound drum and one crappie. The crappie was 14 1/2 inches making it my eleventh TARP for this season, all were caught trolling crankbaits in deep water (3 black and 8 white). I didn’t find any more crappie along the ledges, perhaps it was too full of bigger fish.
