I fished the Star Fleet out of Mazatlan. I was on a cruise and we had a shore excursion to fish for billfish. I spent the day watching my mexican guides try and hook fish. Once they did, We got to reel in the fish. We caught a few dorado but no marlin or sails. It wasn't much of a fishing trip but it was still pretty fun.

If you're just looking and haven't decided a destination yet, try Taihunter International in La Paz, Baja California Sur. I fished with them this summer for 8 days out of pangas and it was a GREAT trip. E-mail Jonathan and get his DVD. Here's a decent rooster I hooked while down there.

We also caught dorado up to 40 lbs and within sight of land from pangas. Jonathan and Jill Roldan run a 1st class operation. E-mail Jonathan and get his DVD.

How did you like fishing out of a panga?
It's a narrow beam, so some guys feel panga's have more pitch and roll, especially when drift fishing, than if they were in a wider beam boat.
Any idea what length, beam, and freeboard height of your boat was?
How much bad water did you get into, and how did you think the panga handled it?
I'm looking at purchasing a panga, and I'm very interested in talking with anyone who has fished one.
If these questions are hijacking the thread, PM me?
Awesome Rooster, BTW.

Pangas are pretty good fishing platforms. We fished 20' pangas to 24' Super pangas. Not all pangas are created equal. Depends what you want or need.
Pangas are heavy (since they are glass boats) and seaworthy. I was surprised how well they cut through the chop but like any other boat that size we got wet in the wind and waves. They are designed to live bait fish using the front quarter of the boat as a livewell. I'll post some pics later of the pangas we fished from.
Do they have any advantages around here? Not really plus you are going to go a long way to find one. There are plenty of boats around here that will do just as well for Utah freshwater fishing.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I just wet tested this one in Sarasota, FL 2 weeks ago: [#800080]http://www.pangamarine.com/superskiff_specs.html[/#800080].
@ 950#, exceptionally light actually.
You’re right about a Panga not really being an advantage around here, but my boat would be for saltwater as well.
Given that it will be several years before I can use the boat often in saltwater, it may be the right boat for me, at the wrong time.
Would love to see pix if you get a chance to post…

I also fished the Star Fleet some years ago out of Mazatlan. We had a phenomenal day with 2 striped marlin and a blue shark. Captain and mate would look for marlin basking on the surface then we'd start circling them in the boat dangling a dead mackeral in front of them til they'd take it. I couldn't believe the fish didn't dive down when we started circling them. Basically we caught every fish they spotted except for some small jumping tuna.
A number of other boats were out that day and most only caught a few tuna or one billfish, no one else caught 2 like we did. Several caught nothing. It can be really hit or miss but if you're there a few days I would think you would do well.

From your inquiry it sounds as though you haven't finalized a location in Mexico. In my opinion after 40 years of fishing Mexico I would recommend Zihuatanajo/Ixtapa with capt. Noe Martinez on the panga "Porphy". His specialty is Roosters inshore and tuna offshore. You'll no doubt catch sails and marlin if you're inclined. His rates are $170 USD a day and it might even be negoitated lower with the decline of American tourist into Mexico.
There are many great hotels in Zihua from $40 a night all the way to $1,0000 + in Ixtapa 10 miles away. I generally stay at the hotel Irma on the bay and walk to the marina. Rates are generally about $45 to $55 a night depending on the season. Often if I'm staying for a few days I'll rent a house...cheaper still.
Many great restaurants around Zihua and there are several you can trade part of your daily catch for meals and drinks.
If you are looking for incredible fishing, check out Zihuatanajo! You wont regret it.
Where ever you decide to go, check out the boat and crew closely. Many will take you on a boat ride and you'll be ly disappointed at the end of the day. Noe Martinez is one of the best Mexican fisherman that I've ever had the pleasure of fishing with. He'll put you on fish. If I can help you more please feel free to send me a PM. Good Luck.
I'm not sure what the picture is that I'm attaching. The file says Zihuatanajo so I'm assuming some kind of fish I caught there through the years.
Additionally I can provide you a lot of info on Cabo as I have also fished there for many years. let me know.
