Went to the Jordan and trudged through the mud to get to the warms spring holes. I was catching a lot of bluegill, more green sunfish than I have ever seen present in past years, white bass, and a few dinky large mouth. I noticed a lot of surface action in the shallows and from the silvery-white appearance I knew they were crappie. I tied on a foam beetle behind a small clip on float and immediately began getting strikes almost as soon as it landed. It was hard to get a hook set yanking that fly sideways out of their little round mouths but I still managed to land a few. Some of them were very decent 10 to 12 inch fish and it was really fun watching them splash on that fly. Next week I am definitely going to use my fly rod, which I suspect will increase my hook up rate, and see how many I can land.

Hi there Albino and happy holidays. Sadly the pup has been adopted by a new family. He was by himself all day at my new apartment and he was getting depressed. There is no doggy door and he couldn't go outside as he pleased. That was making him feel trapped and by the time I got home from work he had been holding it for so long that his eyeballs were floating. He went to a family with youngsters and a stay at home mom. I miss the runt but it's better knowing that he has the attention he needs.

crappie on top are great fun, and there is no fish i'd rather eat! i did quite a bit of fly fishing for crappie in MN, and my go to fly i would recommend is a "boogle bug" (you can google it). it is essentially a panfish/bass surface popper, but i really like the non-popper style rubber legs patterns in smaller sizes for those delicate mouths. foam ants and beetles will certainly do the trick, but you will see a HUGE hookup increase with the slightly larger hook size.

I checked out the boogle bug site and I liked the solar flare and the pearly white patterns. I know for a fact that those colors will produce results on the Jordan. The wider hook gap is also a plus like you stated. Now I just wish I had something smaller than a 5-6 weight to launch flies at the crappie. It may be a blessing to have something with backbone though because you never know when you are going to hook a carp or a sizable largemouth in that river.

i've always fished crappie on a 5 or 6 weight, but that was also mostly on northern mn lakes where wind is usually a factor. like you said, you do get the occasional big boy too...pearly white is actually my favorite of them all, seems to always produce! they are a bit pricey at about 5 bucks a piece, but they hold up much longer than any other popper i've owned. definitely worth it!
