GSP, (George St. Piere??),
We fished Bear Lake HARD yesterday (7am-1:30pm) for whitefish. No luck yet, but its still early. We did manage to jam some hooks into some nice cutthroat yesterday by jigging. I would bet the whitefish will be in the spawning mode by Turkey Day weekend, which is right on time. Then it should last at least 2-3 weeks.

German shorthaired pointer smart guy. Were the cutts you caught shallower along rocky areas where the whities would spawn?

What are good jigs for whitefish? I am planing on going up to try my luck the week after thanksgiving and I have never fished for them before. Also do they like the jigs tipped with night crawler or plain? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I'll answer both GSP and your questions. As for the cutts, read my post "Bear Lake 11/20/2009". Good jigs for whitefish are 1/16 - 1/8 maribou, twister tails, tubes, or road runners. All work well and I like the darker colors, but white & yellow will always work too. I will use nightcrawlers as a "tip" sometimes, but they are not necessary. However, I will always have them along in case the fish are finicky. Hope that helps.
